About this generator
A good Lord of the Rings username shows which corner of Middle-earth you would live in, and it does that without borrowing a character's whole name. A handle that is only a hero's name is the first one to go on any platform, and it says little about you. A place, a meal or a line from the books says more: ShireWanderer, rohan.rider, second.breakfast, FoolOfATook.
This list is fan-made and has no connection to the Tolkien Estate or to any publisher or studio. It draws on the books, so the quotes follow the page: YouCannotPass, as Gandalf says it on the bridge. There are ten styles: places and peoples in CamelCase (MirkwoodArcher), lowercase places with dots (lorien.leaves), hobbit food and comforts (TeaIsAtFour), objects and craft (MithrilThreads), sayings and chapter titles (RiddlesInTheDark), reader handles (AppendixAReader), gamer and cosplay handles (MoriaSpeedrun), character and creature nods (TeamSamwise), and two sets of invented names, one Elvish-sounding (Nimrethiel) and one Dwarvish-sounding (ThrundinDeepdelver).
The invented names are built to sound right and nothing more. They are not words of Sindarin, Quenya or Khuzdul, and no meaning is intended, although they echo the sounds of those languages. We do not check any platform, so a handle you like may already be in use there.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose your corner of the map first. A Shire fan might take bywater.pool or GreenDragonRegular, while a Rohan fan might prefer WestfoldRider or ForthEorlingas.
- Check the length. Limits differ by platform, often between 12 and 20 characters, so short handles such as NineWalkers, leaf.brooch or MallornSeed travel best.
- If a handle is in use, keep the idea and change the form: ShireWanderer can become shire.wanderer or Shire_Wanderer.
- Keep yourself out of it. Leave out your real name, age, school and town, and skip digits that could be read as a birth year. A number from the books, as in Fellowship_of_9 or Party_of_144, is a safer way to add a digit.
- Do not present one of the invented names as real Elvish or Dwarvish. If you want a true Sindarin or Quenya word, look it up in a dictionary of Tolkien's languages first.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good LOTR username?
A clear nod that other readers will catch, a length that fits the platform and nothing personal in it. Handles such as ThereAndBackAgain, mushroom.shortcut and StingGlowsBlue point to something specific in the books. They also read easily at a glance in a chat or a lobby.
Can I use these usernames on Discord, Reddit or in games?
You can try any of them, but we do not check usernames on any platform, so some will already be in use where you want them. If yours is taken, add an underscore, swap one word or switch between CamelCase and lowercase. Each platform also has its own rules on length and on symbols such as dots.
Are the Elvish and Dwarvish handles real words?
No. Names such as Nimrethiel, Ithrendil and SkorinEmberbeard are invented to sound like the Elves and Dwarves of Middle-earth. They are not words of Sindarin, Quenya or Khuzdul and no meaning is intended, so treat them as fan inventions.
Why are there no handles like Gandalf or Legolas in the list?
A handle that is only a character's name is usually in use everywhere, and it can look like an attempt to pass as that character. The list nods to characters instead, with handles such as TeamSamwise, TreebeardPace and StriderInTheCorner. For character names from every people of Middle-earth, use the LOTR name generator.
