Rohan Name Generator

Tolkien built the language of Rohan out of Old English. He explained in the appendices that the Rohirrim's tongue was 'translated' into Anglo-Saxon to show how it related to the Common Speech, so every Rider's name is a real or plausible Old English word. Théoden is simply þēoden, 'king' or 'lord of a people'; Éomer is 'horse-famous'; Éowyn is 'horse-joy'; Éomund is 'horse-protector'; Erkenbrand is 'genuine sword'; Elfhelm is 'elf-helmet'; and Gríma is 'mask'.

That means the best way to invent a Rider of Rohan is to reach for actual Anglo-Saxon naming. Old English names are compounds of two elements: Æthel- (noble), Ælf- (elf), Ead- (wealth, blessed), Beorht- (bright), Wulf- (wolf), Sige- (victory), Here- (army), Éo-/Eoh- (horse) at the front; -ric (ruler), -wine (friend), -helm (helmet), -mund (protector), -stan (stone), -red (counsel), -wulf, -gar (spear) at the back. Women's names end in -wyn/-wynn (joy), -gyth (battle), -burh (fortress), -flæd (beauty), -thryth (strength), or -gifu (gift). Names like Ealdred, Wulfric, Ælfwynn or Cyneburh are historically attested and sound perfectly at home in Edoras.
