About Uruk-hai names

The Uruk-hai are the large, sun-tolerant fighting orcs bred by Saruman at Isengard, and Tolkien gave them only a handful of names: Uglúk, the captain who drives Merry and Pippin across Rohan, his lieutenant Lugdush, the runner Mauhúr and, in the films, Lurtz and the warg-rider Sharku. Mordor also fields Uruks, and Shagrat of Cirith Ungol is named as one. The word itself is Black Speech: uruk means orc and hai is a people, so Uruk-hai is simply 'orc-folk'.

The sound is what matters. Uruk names are short, back-of-the-throat grunts built on the consonants g, k, gh, kh, r, z, sh and d with the dull vowels u, a and o; a circumflex or acute marks a long vowel, as in Uglúk, Mauhúr, Bûrz and Nazgûl. Endings like -úk, -dush, -gash, -rat and -hûr recur, and the film's Lurtz shows how a name can end on a hard consonant cluster. Uruks have no family names; a captain earns an epithet instead, such as One-Eye, Man-Flesh or the Climber.

The list opens with the canon Uruks, then adds original names in the same phonology, Isengard captains with epithets, and longer Black Speech compounds built from roots like ghâsh (fire), burz (dark), lug (tower), durb (rule) and nazg (ring) for Uruks of the White Hand who have risen through the ranks.

How to choose Uruk-hai names

Keep it to one or two syllables for rank-and-file Uruks (Ghrûtz, Mogrash); save the longer Black Speech compounds for captains and shamans of the White Hand.
Front-load hard consonants and finish on a stop: a name that ends in -k, -t, -g or -tz (Uglúk, Lurtz, Lagduf) sounds more Uruk than one ending in a vowel.
Give officers an epithet from a deed rather than a surname: Bûrzan Half-Hand, Uthrak One-Eye, Krûm Man-Flesh.
Distinguish Isengard Uruks from Mordor orcs by flavor: Isengard names lean on long ú and clipped endings (Uglúk, Mauhúr), while Mordor names are rawer and shorter (Shagrat, Gorbag, Snaga).
Say the name in a snarl; if it comes out smooth, swap a vowel for u or add a kh or zh cluster.

Frequently asked questions

What Uruk-hai names are actually in The Lord of the Rings?

Tolkien names only Uglúk, Lugdush and Mauhúr among Saruman's Uruks, plus Shagrat as an Uruk of Mordor. The films added Lurtz at Amon Hen and Sharku the warg-rider. Every other name in this list is original but follows the same Black Speech pattern.

What does Uruk-hai mean?

It is Black Speech for 'orc-folk': uruk is the word for orc and hai means a people or race. Saruman's Uruk-hai wore the White Hand; Sauron's Uruks in Mordor were a separate breed, and the snaga were the smaller, common orcs.

Do Uruk-hai have last names or clan names?

No. Orcs in Middle-earth go by a single name, and a leader picks up an epithet from a deed, a wound or a role, such as the Tracker or Half-Hand. If you want a group identity, name the company or the master they serve instead, for example Uglúk's Uruks of the White Hand.

Can I use these names for Shadow of War, LOTRO or a tabletop game?

Yes. The original names and epithets here are free to use for characters, captains and warchiefs in any game or fan story. Only the canon names (Uglúk, Lurtz and the rest) belong to Tolkien's estate and the films, so keep those to fan works.
