Generate ice sword names for frost blades, giant greatswords and winter heirlooms: compounds like Rimetooth and Sleetwhisper, titles like Blade of the Long Night, glossed words like Jökull (Icelandic: glacier), and joke loot like Slightly Chilly Dagger.

About ice sword names

A cold blade can be named for what it is made of, where it was found, or how it feels to be cut by it. One-word compounds do the first job: a cold word (rime, hoar, sleet, floe, chill) joined to a blade word (tooth, brand, thorn, needle) gives Rimetooth, Hoarthorn or Sleetwhisper. Title names do the second: Blade of the Long Night and Sword of the Winter Knight sound like heirlooms with a history. Mood names such as Mercy's Absence and No Warm Words do the third.

The list of 1,000 also draws on real winter vocabulary. Weather and terrain terms (Squall Line, Pressure Ridge, Firnline) make dry, modern-sounding blades. Words for ice, snow and frost from other languages come with the language and a plain gloss in parentheses, such as Jökull (Icelandic: glacier), Glacies (Latin: ice) and Fubuki (Japanese: blizzard), so you know what you are borrowing. A few Japanese entries add -maru, a traditional name suffix seen on famous swords, and say so.

The rest covers elegant fey blades, cursed and undead frost swords, giant-sized greatswords, snow-zone loot and joke items like Slightly Chilly Dagger. Famous blades from games, anime and novels are left out on purpose, so compare a name with your own setting's lore if canon matters to you.

How to choose ice sword names

  • Match the kind of cold to the wielder. Clean, bright names like Snowdrop's Grace or Star-on-Snow suit paladins and elves; cruel ones like Marrowfreeze or Hearthkiller suit villains and cursed loot.
  • Say the name in a sentence with its owner before you commit: "Ser Aldous draws Hoarthorn" reads well, while a long title is better saved for the moment the blade is first found.
  • When you borrow a glossed word, put the bare word on the character sheet and keep the meaning for the backstory. Look the word up yourself before you use it in published work.
  • Give loot tiers different registers: a joke name for starting gear (Lukewarm Longsword), a compound for mid-tier drops (Chillbrand), a full title for the legendary (Blade of the Unmelting Crown).
  • Names that hint at an event, like The Ninth Snowfall or The Seventh Thaw, give players a question to ask. Decide the answer before the session.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good names for an ice sword?

Short compounds work for most characters: Rimetooth, Shiverpoint, Chillbrand, Floefang. For a blade with a history, use a title or a possessive such as Blade of the Long Night, Winter's Tooth or Glacier's Verdict. For something colder in mood than in temperature, try Mercy's Absence or The Ninth Snowfall.

Are the foreign words on this list real?

The glossed entries use real words for ice, snow, frost and winter weather, for example Hrím (Old Norse: rime), Tsurara (Japanese: icicle) and Ventisca (Spanish: blizzard). The glosses are short, and many of these words carry wider meanings, so check a dictionary before you rely on one. A few entries are phrases or compounds put together from real words, such as Gladius Hiemis (Latin: sword of winter) and Eisklinge (German: ice blade), and coined sword names such as Fubukimaru and Shimokiri say so in the gloss.

Why are famous ice swords from games and anime not on the list?

Those blades belong to their own settings, and this page is for naming yours. Use them as models for the style instead: a short compound, a mournful word, a hint of a curse. Gravechill, Barrowfrost and The Lich's Icicle are written in that vein.

How should a frost giant's sword differ from an elven winter blade?

Giant blades sound heavy and blunt and often brag about scale: Mountain-Splitter of the Rime Jarls, Roofbeam Reaver, The Jotun's Toothpick. Elven and fey blades use light and small, exact images: Star-on-Snow, Moon-Under-Ice, Featherfrost. Keeping the two registers apart tells players who forged a sword before anyone identifies it.
