Generate ice kingdom names for fantasy novels, D&D campaigns, and worldbuilding: Norse-flavored holds, glacier realms, pale dominions, and snowbound crowns that sound like they belong on a map of the far north.

About ice kingdom names

An ice kingdom name has to do two things at once: sound like a place that has existed for centuries, and make the reader feel the cold. The most reliable source material is Old Norse and Old English, the languages of people who actually lived on the edge of the ice. Elements like hrim (rime), is (ice), vald (power), heim (home), holm (island), mark (border) and fell (mountain) give you names such as Hrimvald, Isgardr and Skaldmark that feel weathered rather than invented. English compounds work the same way: Frosthallow, Winterholme and Snowmantle read as real places because hallow, holme and mantle are old map words.

The second approach is descriptive: The Pale Dominion, The Frozen Reaches, The Silent Tundra, Crown of the White Wastes. These are the names outsiders use, and they carry tone. Pale, hushed, still and glass suggest an elegant, eerie court; bitter, shattered, bleak and hollow suggest a harsh survivalist realm. Mixing one formal title with a single vivid image (The Hollow Crown of Eis, Kingdom of the Broken Floe) gives a name a story hook.

Finally, match the name to the political structure. A jarldom, khanate or confederacy of frost tribes should not sound like a courtly crystal monarchy, and a kingdom sealed beneath a glacier deserves a name that hints at what is buried there.

How to choose ice kingdom names

  • Borrow real cold-climate word roots (hrim, is, fell, holm, mark, vik) for the proper-noun part; they sound older and more authentic than made-up syllables.
  • Pick one temperature word per name. Frost, ice, snow and rime are interchangeable in the reader's ear, so Frostice or Snowfrost Hold feels padded.
  • Decide whether the name is what the locals say (Hrimvald, Kaltmark) or what outsiders say (The Frozen Reaches), and use both in your story for depth.
  • Let the ruler's title shape the name: a Jarldom, Khanate or Frost Confederacy suggests tribes and longships, while a Crown or Dominion suggests a centralized court.
  • Check the name against the rest of your map. If your neighboring realms are Celtic or Latin in flavor, a Norse ice kingdom stands out naturally; if they are all Norse, reach for Elvish-sounding or descriptive names instead.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good ice kingdom name?

One strong cold image plus a structure word that implies age. Hrimvald, Frosthallow and The Pale Dominion each do this with two or three syllables of meaning; stacking every winter word into one name (Frostsnow Icecrown) does the opposite.

Can I use these ice kingdom names in my D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. The names are original compounds and descriptive phrases built from common words and Old Norse or Old English roots. Run a quick search before publishing commercially to make sure a name has not become strongly associated with another franchise.

How do I name the capital city or ruler of my ice kingdom?

Reuse one root from the kingdom's name so they feel linked: the Kingdom of Hrimvald might be ruled from Hrimgard by the Hrimjarl. Our winter name, snow elf and frost giant generators can supply matching character names.

Should an ice kingdom name sound hostile or beautiful?

That depends on the role it plays. Bitter, bleak and shattered signal a cursed or warlike realm; glass, crystal, pale and silver signal a remote, beautiful and possibly dangerous court. Neutral names like Norrhaven or Kaltmark let the story decide.
