Generate Fallen London-style names for the Neath: epithet characters like The Unflappable Cartographer and The Candle-Eyed Sexton, Victorian names with honorifics such as Miss Ottilie Crake, plus urchin aliases, zee-captains, ships, streets and clubs. A fan-made list with a small share of canon names.

About Fallen London names

Fallen London, Failbetter Games' browser game, is set in a Victorian London that was stolen by bats and now sits deep underground in the Neath, beside a lightless ocean called the Unterzee. Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies share the world. Its naming habit is unmistakable: few characters go by a personal name. People are known by a description, an adjective plus an occupation, while the Masters of the Bazaar go by Mr and a commodity.

This fan-made list follows that grammar. The bulk is original epithet characters such as The Unflappable Cartographer, The Candle-Eyed Sexton and The Honey-Dazed Dreamer, joined by Victorian player names with honorifics (Miss Ottilie Crake, Dr Ambrose Vane), urchin and criminal aliases, clergy, devils and diplomats, zailors and zee-captains, Clay Men and Rubbery Men, streets and districts, ships for the Unterzee, and salons, newspapers and clubs.

A small share is canon, included as style anchors and not checked against the games: Mr Wines, Mr Pages and the other Masters, The Gracious Widow, The Topsy King, Veilgarden, Ladybones Road and a few dozen more. Everything else is original, including commodity aliases like Mr Ledgers and Mrs Bobbins, which are nicknames for shopkeepers and fences, not new Masters. The list is not affiliated with or endorsed by Failbetter Games.

How to choose Fallen London names

  • Build an epithet from a mood plus a trade. Pick an adjective that hints at a secret (Overdrawn, Unflappable, Candle-Eyed) and an occupation the city would really have; the mismatch between the two is where the character lives.
  • Keep the article and never add a first name. In running prose the article is lower case, the Lachrymose Librettist, and the description stays fixed for the whole story.
  • Player characters are the exception: they carry a real name and a chosen form of address. Pair an honorific with an old-fashioned first name and surname, as in Mrs Euphemia Gathercole or Professor Lucius Tredgold.
  • Spell the sea with a z. Zee, zailor and zee-captain are the setting's own usage, and a ship's name works best when it sounds brave and slightly doomed: Sorrow Deferred, The Last Good Lamp.
  • For streets, clubs and newspapers, take an ordinary London form (Row, Stairs, Supper Club) and darken one word: Candlewick Stairs, Mourner's Row, The Weekly Insinuation.

Frequently asked questions

How are characters named in Fallen London?

Most are known by a description instead of a personal name: an adjective and an occupation, such as the Melancholy Curate or the Repentant Forger in the game itself. The Masters of the Bazaar use Mr and a commodity, like Mr Wines and Mr Pages. Player characters are the main group with ordinary Victorian names.

Are the names in this generator canon?

A small share are: the Masters, well-known figures such as The Gracious Widow and The Topsy King, and places such as Veilgarden, Spite and Wolfstack Docks, none of them checked against the games. The rest are original names in the same grammar, like The Overdrawn Viscount or The Bat-Whispering Postmistress. The game has a very large cast, so an original may match a minor character by coincidence.

Does it work for Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies too?

Yes. Both games share the setting and the habit of naming officers and passengers by description. The zailors, captains and ship names here, such as Captain Hesper Thrale, The Salt-Blind Bosun and Lady of the Unlit Tide, are written for the Unterzee, and most of the epithets suit a locomotive crew in the skies just as well.

Is this generator affiliated with Failbetter Games?

No. It is a fan-made list of 1,000 names for players, writers and game masters, and Failbetter Games did not make or approve it. It quotes no text from the games; it uses only the naming pattern and the small share of canon names described above.
