Gothic Name Generator

Gothic names come from a specific literary lineage: the Gothic novels of the late 1700s (The Castle of Otranto, The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Monk), the Romantic and Victorian writers who inherited them (Poe, the Brontës, Stoker, Shelley, Wilde), and the twentieth-century revivals in film and television (the Addams Family, Tim Burton, Shirley Jackson, Dark Shadows). Their first names are the ones fashionable among the English gentry in the 1790s through 1890s: Ophelia, Lavinia, Rosamund, Wilhelmina, Sebastian, Barnabas, Roderick, Thaddeus. Their surnames are heavy, place-like and often real: Blackwood, Usher, Ravenscroft, Rochester, de Winter.

What separates a gothic name from a merely dark one is restraint. Lenore, Heathcliff and Miss Havisham contain no horror words at all; their weight comes from age, sound and association. Latin and Greek names (Persephone, Cassius, Ianthe, Lucius) and Puritan virtue names (Prudence, Temperance, Mercy) both work because they sound like they were carved on a headstone.

To build a full gothic name, pair a long, ornate first name of three or four syllables with a shorter, harder surname (Evangeline Mortlake, Ambrose Wexley), or invert it with a crisp first name and an ornate surname (Rafe Wolstenholme, Ismay Devereux). Titles, initials and estate names (Lady Isolde Thornhill of Thornhill Hall) push it further toward the aristocratic decay the genre loves.
