Generate 500 character titles and epithets such as The Unbroken, Warden of the Eastern Marches, Breaker of Oaths and First Blade of the Queen. The list spans heroic, villainous, noble, sacred, arcane, roguish and comic registers, ready to attach to any name.

About character title names

A title does work that a name cannot. Epithets are as old as written storytelling: Homer's heroes are swift-footed Achilles and Odysseus of many wiles, and medieval chroniclers told their kings apart with bynames such as the Bold, the Fat, the Bald and the Pious. Old English poetry called a generous lord a ring-giver. This generator collects titles in that tradition, with no personal names attached, so you can bolt one onto a character you already have.

The 500 entries fall into ten styles: short adjectival epithets (The Unbroken, The Twice-Crowned), offices tied to a place (Warden of the Eastern Marches), deed titles (Breaker of Oaths, Climber of the Glass Mountain), court ranks (First Blade of the Queen), noble styles, sacred and arcane honors, animal and nature emblems (The Winter Fox), one-word bynames (Stormcaller), villain and underworld titles such as Thief of Thrones, and comic ones like Warden of the Biscuit Tin.

Titles stack. A ruler's full style is usually a chain of them, read out by a herald in descending order of importance, and the length of the chain is itself a piece of characterization. One title suits a wanderer, while six suit an emperor or a bore.

How to choose character title names

  • Let other people give the title. An epithet chosen by enemies (The Red-Handed) says something different from one granted by a grateful town (Holder of the Bridge).
  • Tie offices to a named place on your map. Warden of the Salt Road is a job with a location, a salary and rivals, which is three plot hooks for the price of one line.
  • Use ordinals for instant hierarchy. First Spear of the Khan implies a second and a third who want the post.
  • Mix registers for comedy. A grand form wrapped around a small thing, as in Lord of the Third Best Chair, works because the grammar stays serious.
  • After a name, write the article in lower case (Maren the Unbroken). Keep the capital when the title stands alone as a form of address (The Unbroken).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a title and an epithet?

A title is granted with an office or rank, such as Steward of the Empty Throne or Keeper of the Privy Purse, and passes to the next holder. An epithet belongs to one person and describes them or something they did, such as The Twice-Crowned or Breaker of Sieges. This list has both, and most characters sound best with one of each at most.

How do I attach one of these titles to a name?

Adjectival epithets and emblems follow the name directly, as in Maren the Unbroken or Joss the Winter Fox. Offices and deed titles follow a comma, as in Lady Ysolde, Warden of the Eastern Marches. One-word bynames such as Stormcaller or Kingmaker can stand in for a surname.

Can I use these titles for villains?

Yes. One style is written for antagonists, with entries such as Lord of Ashes, Shadow Behind the Crown, Eater of Oaths and He Who Waits Below. Many heroic titles also turn sinister with a change of context, since Bringer of the Long Peace could describe a saint or a conqueror.

How many titles should one character have?

One or two in everyday use. Save the full chain for formal scenes, where a herald reading out Count of the Drowned Coast, Regent of the Child Throne and Keeper of the Western Gate tells the room exactly who has arrived. For comic effect, end a grand chain with something small, such as Finder of Lost Socks.
