Generate steampunk character names that sound like they stepped off an airship gangway: Victorian given names paired with real period surnames, invented mechanical ones like Cogsworth and Mainspring, titled aeronauts and professors, street nicknames, and Continental and American variants. For novels, RPGs, cosplay personas and convention badges.
About steampunk names
Steampunk names work by layering. Underneath is a genuinely Victorian given name, the kind that filled 1870s census pages and has since fallen out of use: Ignatius, Thaddeus, Araminta, Wilhelmina, Percival, Euphemia, Obadiah, Hepzibah. On top sits a surname that does one of two jobs. Either it is a real, slightly theatrical English surname of the period, such as Pemberton, Hallowell, Postlethwaite or Fotheringay, which grounds the character in a believable alternate 19th century, or it is an invented compound that quietly smuggles in the machinery: Cogsworth, Mainspring, Crankshaw, Lockspindle, Ferrocast. The best steampunk casts mix both so the mechanical names read as flavour rather than a gimmick.
Titles and nicknames carry the rest of the weight. The genre loves rank and credentials, so Captain, Commodore, Professor, Doctor, Lady and Inspector are not decoration but a shorthand for where someone stands in an airship crew or a learned society. At the other end of the social ladder, engine-room hands and street urchins go by epithets like Maggie "Gears" Pruett or Billy Soot. This list also steps outside London, with French, German, Russian and American-frontier names, because a world of airships is a world where the Aetherial Express stops in Marseille, Vienna and Saint Louis.
Tips for choosing a name
- Use a real Victorian surname for your protagonist and save the invented mechanical ones (Cogsworth, Mainspring, Crankshaw) for inventors, engineers and comic relief, so they land as character notes instead of puns.
- Match the title to the role: Captain or Commodore for airship crew, Professor or Doctor for tinkerers and alienists, Lady or Sir for patrons and villains, Inspector for anyone chasing them through the fog.
- Give lower-deck characters a nickname in quotation marks between first and last name, like Nan "Rivets" Coombe; it signals class and trade without a line of exposition.
- For a non-British setting, borrow the same recipe in another language: von Hesselbach or Eisenhauer for Prussian engineers, Duchamp or Vautrin for Parisian aeronauts, Colt-Harrow for a frontier gunsmith.
- Say the full name with its title aloud. Steampunk names should be slightly too long; if it trips off the tongue too easily it may read as plain historical fiction.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound steampunk rather than just Victorian?
Victorian names are the base; steampunk adds a mechanical or scientific layer. That can be an invented surname built from brass, cogs, steam, valves or pistons, a professional title like Professor or Chief Engineer, or a trade nickname. A name like Thaddeus Pemberton is Victorian; Professor Thaddeus Crankshaw is steampunk.
Can I use these names for cosplay or a convention persona?
Yes, that is one of the most common uses. Pick a title that matches your costume (aeronaut, alienist, clockmaker, sky pirate), pair it with a full name from the list, and add a short epithet if you want a calling card. Many cosplayers keep the same persona name across events.
Do steampunk names have to be British?
No. Britain is the default because the genre grew out of Victorian London, but steampunk worlds routinely include Prussian engineers, French aeronauts, Russian inventors and American frontier gunsmiths. The list includes names in each of those registers so you can build an international crew.
Are the surnames like Postlethwaite and Fotheringay real?
Yes. Most of the longer, theatrical-sounding surnames here are genuine English family names that were common in the 19th century and have become rare since, which is exactly why they feel period-correct. The obviously mechanical ones, such as Cogsworth or Lockspindle, are invented for the genre.
