Generate ettin names for D&D and other fantasy games: rhyming head pairs like Grub and Snub, the compounds a whole ettin goes by like Bragdrag and Gorglemorgle, left-head and right-head epithets such as Yurk the Left, and titled chiefs like Warchief Gorvash.

About ettin names

An ettin is a two-headed giant, and in Dungeons & Dragons the naming joke is built into the monster: each head has its own short name, and everyone else runs the two together. A pair called Gurn and Durn answers to Gurndurn whether the heads like it or not. This list is built around that format. Most entries are a pair of head names that rhyme or nearly match, written three ways: side by side (Lurk and Murk), run together as the name the whole creature goes by (Bragdrag, Gorglemorgle), or hyphenated (Grak-Grok, Urk-Thol).

The sound sits close to orc and ogre naming: one or two blunt syllables a head, heavy on g, k, r and u. Longer pairs such as Gorzak and Morzak or Hurzle and Murzle suit an ettin with a little more standing. Because the heads rarely agree, epithets tell them apart: Yurk the Left, Right-Head Hrolg, Morg Who Sleeps, or a double entry like Urm the Wise, Gurm the Otherwise.

The rest are names for ettins that lead. These are single brutish names with a title, from Chief Gorzuk and Two-Crown Murg to Den Mother Urzga, for the one ettin in the hills that the others obey.

How to choose ettin names

  • Name the heads first, then say both names fast. The compound should fall out by itself: Mok and Zok become Mokzok. If it trips your tongue, swap the order.
  • Give each head one trait and let the epithet carry it. Players remember Blug Who Talks and Mok Does the Hitting long after they forget the hit points.
  • Use full rhymes (Grub and Snub, Munch and Crunch) for a comic encounter and near-matches or unmatched pairs (Durg-Darg, Zar-Thud) when the ettin should feel like a threat.
  • For a leader, use a title and one heavy name in public, such as Warchief Gorvash or Boss Grumdak, and keep the two head names for the moment the heads start to argue.
  • Decide which head speaks to the party. A double entry like Skog Says Yes, Drog Says No is a ready-made negotiation scene.

Frequently asked questions

How do ettin names work in D&D?

Each head has its own name, usually one or two crude syllables, and other creatures combine the two into a single name for the whole ettin. In this list Mok and Zok become Mokzok, and Skun and Grun are called Skungrun. Entries that show only the compound, such as Thokmok or Krogzog, split the same way.

Do the two head names have to rhyme?

No. Rhyme is the easiest pattern to remember at the table, which is why pairs like Tusk and Husk fill a large share of the list. Near-matching pairs such as Grak-Grok and unmatched ones such as Urk-Thol or Mog-Hash work just as well, and they sound less like a joke.

Which head's name goes first in the compound?

The list puts the order that is easier to say first, and that is a good rule for your own pairs too. At the table it also makes a fine running argument: each head will insist its own name belongs in front.

Can I use these names for other two-headed monsters?

Yes. The paired format suits a two-headed ogre, a two-headed troll or any creature whose heads bicker. The titled names, such as Cave Lord Grishak or Pit King Skorzul, also work for an ordinary giant or ogre chief.
