Troll Name Generator

Troll names fall into a few recognizable families depending on which trolls you mean. The brutish cave trolls of Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Tolkien favor short, guttural syllables built on hard K, G, R, and TH sounds: Grok, Thrak, Krug, Ugluk. Two of those blocks smashed together (Grognok, Muzgrak, Rogthar) give you a longer name that still sounds like it was grunted rather than spoken. Descriptive nicknames such as Bonecracker, Snaggletusk, or Bridgekeeper come next and usually describe what the troll eats, looks like, or guards.

The older folklore tradition is Scandinavian. Norse trolls and jotnar carry names like Skrymir, Hrungnir, Thrivaldi, and Bergrisi, and the trolls of Norwegian and Swedish tales are often just called by homely human names with a twist: Old Man Underbridge, Mother Mudgorge, Ketil Cavemouth. That style suits fairy-tale trolls, Trollhunter-style stories, and any setting where trolls live under bridges and turn to stone at dawn.

A good troll name should sound like it comes from a big, dim, and dangerous creature. Keep it to one or two hard-hitting syllables plus an optional epithet, and let that epithet do the characterization: Krag the Hungry, Boruk the Regrower, Gorlag Two-Heads. If the troll is a boss monster or recurring villain, give it a full name and a nickname the locals whisper.
