Generate names for the cities, steadings and strongholds of giants: glacier fortresses like Rimeborg, volcano forges like Emberfell Forge, sea halls like Thunderhall, cave cities like Stonejaw Hold and boasts such as The Seat Above the Storm.

About giant city names

A giant city is named for its scale and for the element its builders live in. Fantasy games usually sort giants into six kinds, and each kind suggests a different sort of place. Frost giants hold glacier fortresses (Rimeborg, The Calving Wall), fire giants run volcano forges (Emberfell Forge, Cinderthrone), cloud giants keep floating estates (The Cumulus Estate), storm giants rule sea halls and cliff seats (Thunderhall, Tidethrone), stone giants carve cave cities (Stonejaw Hold, The Echoing Galleries) and hill giants squat in steadings such as Gutbucket Steading.

Norse-flavored compounds do much of the work. In Old Norse, heim is a home or world, gard an enclosure or stronghold, borg a fortress and fjall a mountain, so Hrimborg reads as rime fortress and Jokulgard as glacier stronghold. A small share of entries are places from Norse and Greek sources, each with a label that says what it is there. They are realms, mountains and walls more often than cities: Jotunheim is a realm and Gastropnir is a wall.

The rest of the list covers ruined giant empires (The Broken Colossus), places named for their size (The Thousand-Step Stair, Hundredfathom Door), boasts used as titles (The Wall No Army Scaled), titan and cyclops strongholds, markets and moots, and a few ogre and troll border forts such as Trollbridge Fort.

How to choose giant city names

  • Match the name to the kind of giant. Ice, rime and floe words suit frost giants, slag, anvil and cinder suit fire giants, and anything with a table, trough or stewpot in it belongs to hill giants.
  • Let the name show scale. The Thousand-Step Stair or The Mile-High Gate tells players the place was not built for them before you describe a single wall.
  • Give the place two names: the giants' own (Hrimborg, Thursaheim) and the one the small folk in the valley use (The Big Folk's Market, The Place of Heavy Footsteps).
  • Use the labeled myth entries the way the sources do. Jotunheim is a whole realm and Gastropnir is a wall, so they work better as a region or a landmark on your map than as a single town.
  • Save boast names such as Never Besieged or The Unconquered Height for a capital or a proud jarl's seat. One per map is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a giant city?

Short, heavy compounds read well on a map: Rimeborg, Bouldergate, Thunderhall, Cinderthrone and Skyhammer Keep. For a capital, try a title such as The Seat Above the Storm or The Table of Nine Kings. A hill giant camp wants something blunter, like Bigbelly Camp or The Stewpot.

Which names come from real mythology?

Twenty entries carry a label in parentheses. Seventeen are from Norse myth and saga, such as Jotunheim, Utgard, Thrymheim and Gastropnir, and three are from Greek sources: Mount Othrys, Phlegra and Telepylos. The label says what the place is in the sources, which is often a realm, a mountain or a wall and not a city. The rest are invented names in the same style, so some may happen to match a name used elsewhere.

What do heim, gard and borg mean in giant place names?

They are Old Norse words: heim is a home or world, gard an enclosed yard or stronghold, and borg a fortress. That makes Thursaheim the home of the thurses, an Old Norse word for giants, Jokulgard a glacier stronghold and Hrimborg a rime fortress. The list also uses fjall (mountain), vik (bay) and sal (hall).

Can I use these names for D&D giants?

Yes. The list follows the giant kinds that tabletop games use, so there are steadings for hill giants, forges for fire giants and floating estates for cloud giants. The names are meant for strongholds of your own, and none is presented as an official place from a published adventure.
