Hill Giant Name Generator

Hill giants sit at the bottom of the giant ordning in Dungeons & Dragons, and their names are meant to sound that way. Where storm giants get grand Greek-flavored names and frost giants get Old Norse, hill giants get one or two heavy syllables you could bellow across a valley with your mouth full: Guh, Moog, Hrug, Grugnur, Thud. Published adventures set the tone with names like Chief Guh in Storm King's Thunder and Grolantor, the hill giants' gluttonous god. Aim for a grunt that accidentally became a word: hard g, k, d and b sounds and short, flat vowels.

Bynames do the rest of the work, and for hill giants they are almost always about food, livestock or destruction: Boarbelly, Sheepmaw, Cowchewer, Cartcrusher, Millbreaker. A hill giant is proud of having eaten a whole ox or stomped a barn, so the byname reads like a boast a farmer would understand. Female hill giants follow the same rules (Brunna Sowbelly, Hulda Hogmother), and chiefs are simply the biggest and hungriest.

For a slightly more rustic, fairy-tale flavor, the list also draws on British folklore giants such as Gogmagog, Cormoran, Blunderbore and Galligantus, and on Germanic and Norse given names paired with crude bynames, which suit hill giants living on the edge of human farmland.
