Bugbears are the biggest members of the goblinoid family in Dungeons & Dragons: seven feet of shaggy muscle who prefer to ambush rather than charge. Their names come from the same Goblin tongue as goblins and hobgoblins, so they are short, guttural, and heavy on hard consonants and rolled r sounds. Published examples like Klarg from Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Volo's Guide sample names Ilrik, Krak, and Ropp show the pattern: one or two syllables, easy to bark across a cave.

Bugbear culture is built around personal strength and reputation, so many bugbears carry a deed-name earned in a raid or a duel. These follow the goblinoid habit of blunt, literal epithets: Skullsplitter, Doorbreaker, Elf-Eater, Torchsnuffer. A chief or warchief may add their tribe, giving names like Grukk of the Broken Spear or Klarg of the Cragmaw. In Eberron the Dhakaani goblinoids use more structured names with clan honorifics like Duur'kala, so a few of those forms are included too.

When naming a bugbear player character, remember they are stealthy for their size and often chaotic rather than stupid; a name that hints at cunning, such as Vaskh the Quiet Death, is more interesting than another Bonecrusher.
