Generate Dickensian character names: the famous cast of Dickens novels alongside hundreds of original Victorian names in the same comic, sharp-edged style, perfect for historical fiction, stage plays, games and parody.

About dickens names

Charles Dickens named characters the way a cartoonist draws faces: the sound of the name is the personality. Pecksniff pecks and sniffs, Gradgrind grinds, Murdstone is murder and stone, and Pumblechook is all pompous bluster. He built surnames from plosive consonants (Bumble, Squeers, Quilp, Podsnap), from real trade and place names bent slightly out of shape (Cratchit, Jellyby, Wemmick), and from comic compounds such as M'Choakumchild and Honeythunder that announce their owner's vice before the character opens his mouth.

First names do the other half of the work. Dickens favored Old Testament and Puritan names that already sounded old-fashioned in the 1840s (Ebenezer, Uriah, Jonas, Seth, Josiah, Hephzibah), paired with brisk English diminutives for the sympathetic poor (Pip, Kit, Sam, Dot, Nell). A Dickensian villain is often a Jonas or an Uriah; a put-upon clerk is a Bob or a Tom; a grand hypocrite carries a Latin or classical name like Septimus, Augustus or Volumnia.

This generator mixes the real cast of the novels with original names that follow the same rules, so you can pull a recognizable Scrooge or Micawber for reference or an unused Obadiah Crumplethorpe for your own Victorian story.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Let the surname sound like the character's defining trait: hard consonants for bullies and misers (Quilp, Gradgrind, Scrooge), soft mumbling sounds for the timid (Toots, Sloppy, Twemlow).
  • Pair an old-fashioned biblical first name with a comic surname for instant Dickensian flavor: Hezekiah Bloat and Jedediah Mumblecroft read as Victorian without any further explanation.
  • Use Mr., Mrs. or Miss with a bare surname for minor figures and officials (Mr. Bumble, Mrs. Sparsit); it keeps them at a satirical distance, as Dickens did.
  • For a sympathetic hero or heroine, keep the name simple and warm (Esther Summerson, Tom Pinch, Kit Nubbles) so the grotesques around them stand out.
  • If you are writing original fiction, avoid the famous canon names in this list and use the original ones or recombine first names and surnames to build your own.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound Dickensian?

Sound symbolism and period flavor. Dickens chose surnames whose consonants mimic a trait (Pecksniff, Gradgrind, Murdstone), mixed with slightly warped real English names (Cratchit, Wemmick) and biblical or classical first names like Ebenezer, Uriah and Septimus.

Are these real Dickens characters or invented names?

Both. Roughly two hundred names are the real cast of novels from Pickwick Papers to Edwin Drood; the rest are original names written in the same style so you have fresh options for your own stories.

Can I use these names in my own novel, play or game?

The original names are free to use. Dickens's own characters are long out of copyright, but a name like Scrooge or Fagin carries the original story with it, so use canon names only when you want that association.

How did Dickens come up with his character names?

He kept lists of unusual real names gathered from street signs, legal documents and registers, then altered them for comic or symbolic effect. Fezziwig, Jarndyce and Boffin all began with real names or sounds he overheard and sharpened.
