Dickens Name Generator

Charles Dickens named characters the way a cartoonist draws faces: the sound of the name is the personality. Pecksniff pecks and sniffs, Gradgrind grinds, Murdstone is murder and stone, and Pumblechook is all pompous bluster. He built surnames from plosive consonants (Bumble, Squeers, Quilp, Podsnap), from real trade and place names bent slightly out of shape (Cratchit, Jellyby, Wemmick), and from comic compounds such as M'Choakumchild and Honeythunder that announce their owner's vice before the character opens his mouth.

First names do the other half of the work. Dickens favored Old Testament and Puritan names that already sounded old-fashioned in the 1840s (Ebenezer, Uriah, Jonas, Seth, Josiah, Hephzibah), paired with brisk English diminutives for the sympathetic poor (Pip, Kit, Sam, Dot, Nell). A Dickensian villain is often a Jonas or an Uriah; a put-upon clerk is a Bob or a Tom; a grand hypocrite carries a Latin or classical name like Septimus, Augustus or Volumnia.
