Victorian Pen Name Generator
Bylines, initials and signatures in the nineteenth-century manner
A list of 1,000 pen names in the manner of nineteenth-century authors, from sober bylines like Ellery Thorne and A. M. Wrenfield to one-word signatures like Whim, Latin tags like Viatrix and anonymous descriptions like A Lady of the Parish.
About Victorian pen names
Many nineteenth-century authors did not sign their own names. Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë published as Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, Mary Ann Evans became George Eliot, Charles Dickens signed his early sketches Boz, Charles Dodgson reworked his given names into Lewis Carroll, and Maria Louise Ramé wrote as Ouida. Those seven are real and sit in the list as anchors. The rest are new names in the manner of the period. A Latin tag or a description such as A Lady was common property then, so treat none of them as one person's historical signature.
About a third of the list is the form the Brontës chose: an ambiguous first name with a sober surname (Ellery Thorne, Averil Stanmore), with darker names for sensation fiction and gentle ones for poets. The rest are forms only a byline has: initials (A. M. Wrenfield, M. E. W.), one-word signatures (Whim, Quillet), Latin and Greek tags (Viatrix, Philomathes), descriptions (A Rector's Daughter, One Who Was There), family styles (Mrs. Alfred Pettingale, Aunt Tabitha) and lines that point to an earlier book (The Author of 'Holme Grange').
The titles inside those lines are invented, so swap in your own. Initials and tags suit essays and letters to newspapers, a description suits a memoir, and a full name suits a three-volume novel.
How to choose Victorian pen names
- Choose the form before the name: a full name for a novel, initials for verse or criticism, a Latin tag or a description such as A Constant Reader for letters, memoirs and advice.
- For the Brontë effect, keep your own initials. Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell share theirs with Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë.
- In a line such as The Author of 'Thornley Chase', replace the invented title with an earlier work of your own. The formula only makes sense when that book exists.
- Mind the gender of a Latin tag: Viatrix is a woman traveler, Peregrinus and Rusticus are masculine, Peregrina and Rustica feminine.
- Search any name yourself before you publish under it. A byline that suits the period may already belong to a real writer, past or present.
Frequently asked questions
Which names in the list are real Victorian pseudonyms?
Seven: Currer Bell, Ellis Bell and Acton Bell (Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë), George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), Boz (Charles Dickens), Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) and Ouida (Maria Louise Ramé). The others are written in the period manner. Generic forms such as A Lady or a short Latin tag were signed by many writers, so they belong to no one in particular.
Why did Victorian women writers choose masculine or ambiguous names?
Charlotte Brontë wrote that she and her sisters did not like to declare themselves women because they had an impression that authoresses were liable to be looked on with prejudice. A neutral byline let the book be judged first. Names in that pattern here include Ellery Thorne, Averil Stanmore and Leslie Dunmow.
What does a 'By the Author of' byline mean?
Publishers often left the name off a title page and pointed to an earlier success instead, so a new novel appeared as the work of the author of the last one. Lines like The Author of 'Holme Grange' and The Writer of 'Lamplight Essays' follow that formula with invented titles. Put a title of your own in its place.
Can I use one of these as a pen name today?
Yes. A byline in a period style works for a modern book: Silas Marchmont or A. M. Wrenfield would suit a novel, and a signature like Whim suits a column or a newsletter. We have not checked whether anyone already writes under these names, so search the one you like before it goes on a cover.
