Generate orphanage names spanning real historical styles: Victorian foundling hospitals and asylums, saint-named Catholic homes, Dickensian workhouses, benefactor-funded homes, and modern children's homes. Written for historical fiction, gothic novels, and RPG settings.

About orphanage names

Real orphanages were named according to who ran them and when. Church-run homes carried a saint's name plus the words Home, Orphanage, or Asylum (St. Vincent's Home for Boys, St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum), and religious sisterhoods named homes after their order or Our Lady. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century philanthropic institutions used stark descriptive titles: the Foundling Hospital, the Female Orphan Asylum, the Home for Friendless Children, the Asylum for Fatherless Children. Trade societies funded homes for their own members' children, giving us the Sailors' Orphan Home, the Railway Servants' Orphanage, and the Licensed Victuallers' Orphan Home.

Wealthy benefactors attached their surnames (the Barnardo Homes, the Müller Orphan Houses, or a fictional Pemberton Home for Orphans), while royal patronage produced names like the Royal Albert Orphan Asylum. From the 1920s onward, reformers preferred softer, house-like names to erase the workhouse stigma: The Willows, Sunnyside Home, Fairhaven Children's Home. Modern child-welfare language avoids the word orphanage entirely in favor of children's home, cottage, or village.

For fiction, the era decides the name. "Asylum" and "Foundling" place a story before 1900; a saint plus "Home for Boys" suggests a Catholic institution mid-century; a gothic single-house name (Blackthorn House, Marrowgate) signals something is wrong inside; and a bird or tree name reads as a modern, well-meaning home. This generator covers each of those registers so the name does the period work for you.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the vocabulary to the century: Foundling Hospital and Orphan Asylum for pre-1900, Home for Boys/Girls for 1900-1960, Children's Home or Village for anything modern.
  • For gothic or horror settings, drop the institutional words entirely and use a house name (Wraithmoor House, The Rookery); a name that sounds like a manor implies secrecy.
  • Name the funder or patron to add texture: a Railway Servants' Orphanage or Freemasons' Orphan Asylum immediately explains who the children are and who visits.
  • Saint names carry connotations. St. Jude (lost causes), St. Vincent de Paul (charity), and St. Nicholas (children) were popular for real homes for a reason.
  • If the story is contemporary, avoid the word orphanage in the actual name; real modern institutions say children's home, residential home, or cottage.

Frequently asked questions

What were orphanages historically called?

Common terms were Foundling Hospital, Orphan Asylum, Home for Destitute or Friendless Children, and later Children's Home. Church-run institutions were named for saints or religious orders, and many were funded by trades or benefactors whose names they carried.

How do I name an orphanage for a Victorian or gothic story?

Use period vocabulary such as Asylum, Foundling, Refuge, or Waifs and Strays, and either a saint, a benefactor's surname, or a bleak house name (Blackthorn House, Marrowgate Orphan Asylum). The heavier and more formal the phrasing, the more Victorian it feels.

Are these names based on real orphanages?

A few, like the Foundling Hospital, Barnardo's homes, and the Müller Orphan Houses, are real historical institutions included for authenticity. The rest are original names built on the same conventions and free to use in fiction and games.

Do orphanages still exist, and what are they called today?

Traditional orphanages have largely been replaced in most countries by foster care and small residential children's homes. Modern facilities use names like Children's Home, Children's Village, or Cottage, and organizations such as SOS Children's Villages avoid the word orphanage entirely.
