Servant Name Generator

Servant names in a British country house followed strict rules that period dramas still respect. Upper servants were addressed formally: the butler and the housekeeper by surname with Mr. or Mrs. (Mr. Carson, Mrs. Hughes), whether or not the housekeeper was actually married. A lady's maid was Miss plus surname (Miss O'Brien), and a valet or visiting servant was often called by his employer's name below stairs. Lower servants (housemaids, kitchen maids, footmen, hall boys) went by first name only, and mistresses frequently renamed a maid to something 'suitable' such as Mary or Emma, which is why the same plain names recur through the era.

The surnames themselves tend to be solid English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish stock rather than gentry names: Hudson, Bridges, Patmore, Dobbs, Tibbs, Higgins, Crabtree. A butler with an aristocratic-sounding name (Pemberton, Harrington) suggests a very grand household or a bit of self-invention. Cooks in fiction are almost always Mrs. plus a homely surname (Mrs. Bridges, Mrs. Patmore), and nannies keep 'Nanny' as a title for life.
