About thief names

Thief names come in three main flavours, and the best fictional thieves usually have more than one. First is the working nickname handed out by other criminals: Fingers Malone, Mickey Two-Keys, Louie Locks. These describe a skill (locks, windows, safes), a physical tell (Twitch, Nine-Fingers) or a signature (Sixpence, Diamonds). Second is the press-invented moniker for an uncaught burglar, almost always an animal or a shadow: The Magpie, The Grey Fox, The Nightingale, The Cat. Third is the character's actual name, which for a good thief tends to be quiet and forgettable, or aristocratically smooth for the gentleman-thief tradition of Arsène Lupin and Raffles.

History supplies plenty of models. Moll Cutpurse ran a fencing operation in Jacobean London, Jonathan Wild styled himself "Thief-Taker General" while running the gangs he pretended to catch, Adam Worth was the real "Napoleon of Crime" behind Moriarty, and Doris Payne stole jewels across six decades. Fantasy fiction added its own conventions with Locke Lamora and Garrett of the City: an ordinary first name and a surname with a slight edge to it.

The list below mixes all of these so you can give a single character a birth name, a street name and a headline name, which is exactly how a memorable thief accumulates a reputation.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give a thief two names: a plain legal name for their cover and a nickname the underworld uses, then let the story reveal which one matters.
  • Nickname formula: skill or tool plus first name (Louie Locks, Suzy Safecracker) reads as street-level; a lone animal name (The Magpie) reads as elite and uncaught.
  • For a gentleman or lady thief, pick something smooth and continental such as Arsène Beaumont or Vittoria Falcone, then contrast it with a brutal crew.
  • Avoid names that sound like assassins (Shadow, Blade, Death); a thief's name should suggest hands, locks, birds, quiet and luck, not killing.
  • Test the name in a wanted poster and in dialogue: 'the Ferret hit the vault again' should sound natural to a constable.

Frequently asked questions

How do thieves get their nicknames?

Usually from other criminals or the police, based on a specialty (locks, safes, windows), a physical quirk (Twitch, Nine-Fingers) or a habit (leaving a coin behind). Newspapers give uncaught burglars animal names like the Grey Fox or the Magpie.

What are some famous real-life thief names?

Moll Cutpurse, Jonathan Wild, Adam Worth, Charles Peace, Vincenzo Peruggia (who stole the Mona Lisa), Willie Sutton, Doris Payne and Albert Spaggiari are all documented thieves whose names have entered crime lore.

Can I use these thief names for a D&D rogue or Thieves' Guild NPC?

Yes. The fantasy entries such as Vex Silvertongue, Ozric Halfshadow and Nym Softstep are written for tabletop rogues, and the nickname style works well for guild contacts and fences.

Are these names free to use commercially?

The invented names are free for novels, games and other commercial projects. A few entries are famous fictional characters (Arsène Lupin, Selina Kyle, Locke Lamora) included as reference, so use those only as inspiration.
