About Cavalier King Charles Spaniel names

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel carries a king in its name. Toy spaniels were a familiar sight at the court of Charles II, and that is where this list of 1,000 names begins: Stuart given names such as Charles, Rupert, Henrietta and Minette, and Restoration surnames such as Pepys, Purcell, Wren and Dryden. Cavalier was the name for the Royalist side in the English Civil War, so Royalist is here too, along with Boscobel and Oak Apple for the oak tree that hid Charles II after the Battle of Worcester.

The four coat colors supply the next large share. Blenheim, chestnut on white, is named after Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, home of the Dukes of Marlborough, and the chestnut mark some dogs have on top of the head is called the lozenge or Blenheim spot. Ruby dogs get wine, berry and gemstone names such as Claret, Morello and Cornelian. Tricolor dogs get names in threes and for the tan pips over the eyes, and Black and Tan dogs get candlelight and spice names such as Black Treacle and Clove.

The rest is about the lap and the look: Cushion, Muff and Eiderdown, Feathers and Ringlet for the long ears, characters from the Restoration stage, and names from the breed's own history, such as Roswell and Ann's Son.

How to choose Cavalier King Charles Spaniel names

  • Start with the coat. Lozenge, Chestnut Pearl and Rosa Mundi belong on a Blenheim, Claret and Cherry Ripe on a Ruby, Tan Pips and Three Kingdoms on a Tricolor, and Black Treacle or Candlelight on a Black and Tan.
  • Choose the formal name and the call name together. Henrietta shortens to Hetty, Clarendon to Clare, Marlborough to Marley and Bolingbroke to Bolly, so a long court name still works at the park.
  • Say it aloud before you decide. Pepys is pronounced Peeps and Beauclerk is said Bo-clair, while Rupert, Rowley, Minette and Nelly are easy for everyone in the house.
  • For two or three dogs, borrow a set: Pepys and Evelyn, Mirabell and Millamant, Dido and Aeneas, or Athos, Porthos and Aramis for a trio.
  • A name taken from history comes with a story. Read a little about Monmouth, Castlemaine or Rochester before you commit, so the story is one you are happy to tell.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a Blenheim Cavalier?

Blenheim, Marlborough, Churchill and Woodstock all come from the palace the color is named after. For a dog with the chestnut mark on top of the head, try Lozenge, Thumbprint, Beauty Spot or Lucky Spot. Chestnut Pearl, Seville Marmalade and Rosa Mundi describe the chestnut and white coat itself.

Why is the breed named after King Charles?

The name points to Charles II, who reigned from 1660 to 1685 and whose court was known for its toy spaniels. Cavalier was the word for the Royalists of the Civil War, and it was added in the twentieth century to tell the longer-nosed type apart from the King Charles Spaniel. The list uses both sources, from Old Rowley, a nickname of the king, to Royalist and Boscobel.

What names suit a Ruby, Tricolor or Black and Tan Cavalier?

For a Ruby, look at Claret, Burgundy, Morello, Cornelian and Titian. A Tricolor suits Trio, Triptych, Musketeer, Tan Pips and Patchwork. For a Black and Tan, try Black Velvet, Burnt Sugar, Tiger's Eye, Lamplight and Firedog.

Are the court names taken from real people?

Yes. Names such as Rupert, Henrietta, Clarendon, Purcell and Godolphin are given names, surnames and titles from the Stuart and early Georgian courts, used here simply as names for a dog. Millamant, Dorimant and Lady Wishfort are characters from Restoration comedies, and Shock is the lapdog in Alexander Pope's mock-heroic poem about a stolen lock of hair.
