The Victorian era ran from Queen Victoria's accession in 1837 to her death in 1901, and its naming habits are more varied than the stereotype of endless Marys and Johns suggests. The core stock was biblical and royal: William, John, George, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann dominated birth registers for the whole century. Around them, fashion moved. The 1840s and 50s brought romantic medieval revivals such as Edith, Ethel, Alice and Arthur, popularised by Tennyson and Walter Scott. From the 1870s onward, flower and gem names (Violet, Ivy, Daisy, Ruby, Pearl) and Latin-flavoured girls' names (Florence, Ada, Beatrice, Mabel) surged, giving the late Victorian nursery its distinctive sound.

Class shaped names too. The gentry favoured heavier, ancestral choices like Algernon, Percival, Augusta and Araminta, often recycled from grandparents, while working families used pet forms as official names: Nellie, Bessie, Minnie, Elsie, Bert and Fred appear on birth certificates, not just at home. Numeric names such as Septimus and Octavia mark a seventh or eighth child, and virtue names like Prudence and Temperance lingered in nonconformist households.
