Automaton Name Generator

An automaton is a machine that imitates life by clockwork, cams and springs rather than code, so its name should sound like it was given by a watchmaker, a court artificer or a grieving inventor, not a software team. Real automata set the tone: the Jaquet-Droz Writer and Musician, the Silver Swan, Vaucanson's Digesting Duck and Kempelen's Mechanical Turk were all named as wonders, with a definite article and a trade. That is why titled names like The Brass Cartographer or The Ticking Warden feel right for a machine built to be shown off.

Workshop naming is the second convention. Artificers number their creations, so Latin ordinals (Primus, Septimus, Decimus), pattern and mark numbers (Warden Pattern Six, Orrin Mark IV) and lot numbers all read as authentic. A nickname often grows on top of the designation, which is how ARC-7 Lantern or Vessel 22 Quiet Hands happen. Makers who love their work give human names instead, usually with a surname drawn from the trade: Petra Mainspring, Cornelius Flywheel, Beatrix Ratchet.

The list also draws on myth and metallurgy. Talos, Galatea and Hephaestion evoke the bronze servants of Greek legend, while Orichalc, Electrum and Ferrum name a machine after what it is cast from. Choose the register that matches who built the automaton and why.
