Droid Name Generator

Star Wars droid names look random, but they follow a system that has been consistent since 1977. The first block is a series or model prefix that tells you what the droid does: R2, R4, R5 and so on are Industrial Automaton astromechs (R2-D2, R5-D4), 3PO marks a Cybot Galactica protocol droid (C-3PO, TC-14), BB is the newer ball-shaped astromech line (BB-8, BB-9E), IG designates Holowan assassin and security models (IG-88, IG-11), and HK is the Systech assassin line from Knights of the Old Republic (HK-47). The second block is an individual serial - a letter and a digit, or two digits - and that is where you get to be creative. Some models flip the pattern (2-1B, 8D8, 4-LOM), which is worth doing occasionally so your setting doesn't feel formulaic.

The second half of the convention is the nickname. Organic crews almost never say the full designation: R2-D2 is Artoo, C-3PO is Threepio, C1-10P is Chopper, K-2SO is Kaytoo. Phonetic shortenings, affectionate insults (Bucket, Rustbucket), and workshop words (Sparks, Servo, Wrench) all fit, and battle droids famously answer to just 'Roger'.

For an original droid, pick a prefix that signals its job, add a short serial with mixed letters and digits, then decide what its owner calls it in a hurry.
