About robot species names
Naming a robot species is a different job from naming a single robot. A species name has to work as a plural, in the mouths of the humans who fear or build them, and often as a faction on a map. Fiction has settled on a few patterns. Descriptive plurals – Synthetics, Mechanoids, Replicants, Hosts – describe what the machines are from a human point of view. Proper-noun races such as the Geth, the Cylons, the Necrons and the Cybertronians sound like nations, which suits machines that have their own culture. Product-line names (Battle Droids, Sentinels, Hunter-Killers) tell you they were built for a job, and definite-article collectives like the Borg or the Swarm imply a hive mind.
The root words matter. Metals and manufacturing verbs (Ferrous Kin, the Forged, the Printed) suggest bodies; computing terms (Binaries, Ghost Processes, Forkers) suggest minds; and clockwork vocabulary (Escapements, Mainsprings, Cogborn) points to a steampunk or fantasy setting like D&D's Warforged and Modrons. Greek myth offers the first artificial beings – Talos, Galatea, Pandora – so names such as Talosians and Galateans read as machines with a long history.
A strong species name also hints at how the machines see themselves. 'Servitors' and 'Custodians' are races that accepted a role; 'Runaways', 'Remnants' and 'the Awakened' are races that broke free. Choose the pattern that matches your story's central question – tool, people or threat – and the rest of the worldbuilding follows.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the point of view first: a name coined by humans (Synthetics, Hosts) feels different from a name the machines chose for themselves (the Consensus, the Awakened). Many settings use both.
- Make sure the name works in every grammatical form you will need – singular, plural, adjective and 'the X homeworld' – before committing; 'a Geth', 'the Geth', 'Geth ships' all work, which is part of why it stuck.
- Match the vocabulary to the setting's technology: clockwork words for steampunk and fantasy constructs, computing words for near-future AI, metallurgy and manufacturing for hard sci-fi.
- Give sub-species or product lines a shared naming scheme (Battle Droids, Probe Droids, Assassin Droids) so readers can tell at a glance they belong to the same manufacturer or origin.
- Definite-article collectives (the Swarm, the Lattice) signal a hive mind; keep them for machines that share a consciousness, and use ordinary plurals for individuals.
Frequently asked questions
What are famous robot species or races in science fiction?
The Cybertronians (Transformers), Cylons (Battlestar Galactica), Geth and Reapers (Mass Effect), Borg (Star Trek), Daleks and Cybermen (Doctor Who), Necrons and Men of Iron (Warhammer 40,000), Replicants (Blade Runner), Sentinels (The Matrix), Warforged (D&D) and the Minds of Iain M. Banks' Culture are among the best known.
How should I name a robot race in my own setting?
Decide whether the machines are tools, people or a threat, then pick a pattern to match: a descriptive plural for tools (Servitors), a proper noun for a machine culture (something like Geth or Necron), and a definite-article collective for a hive mind (the Swarm). Test the name as a singular, plural and adjective.
Can I use these species names in a published game or novel?
The original names here (Ferrous Kin, the Forged, Nullborn, Escapements) are free to use. Franchise names such as Geth, Cylons, Borg, Daleks and Warforged are the property of their publishers and are listed as reference examples only.
What is the difference between a robot species and an AI faction?
A robot species implies distinct physical bodies and usually reproduction or manufacture as a population, while an AI faction may be a single distributed intelligence with many drones. Species names take ordinary plurals (Mechanoids); a single AI faction usually gets a collective name (the Consensus, Skynet).
