Generate warforged names that follow Eberron conventions: single-word function names like Bulwark and Lantern, unit numbers like Three and Seven, battlefield nicknames, and House Cannith serial designations for constructs still finding an identity.

About warforged names

Warforged were built by House Cannith during the Last War, and their names reflect that origin. Most warforged never received a personal name from their creators, so they took the words humans used for them: a job (Cutter, Lantern, Ward), a piece of equipment (Anvil, Glaive, Buckler), a number from their production run (Three, Seven, Unit Twelve), or a nickname earned in the field (Nine Scars, Half-Face, Old Cog). Official Eberron sources list names exactly like these, such as Bulwark, Church, Crunch, Pierce, Relic, Temple, Watcher, and Zealot, which is why a good warforged name is short, concrete, and usually a single English word.

What the name means to the character matters more than how it sounds. Some warforged embrace their function name with pride; others resent being called Hammer forever and choose a new one after gaining freedom under the Treaty of Thronehold. Abstract virtue names like Patience, Resolve, or Verity suggest a warforged trying to define who they are beyond what they do. A serial designation like CN-17 tells the table the character has not yet decided.

Warforged rarely use surnames, and if they do it is often a dragonmarked house that owned or built them, or a descriptive compound like Ironward.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a name that says something about the character's history: a job name for a soldier who still identifies with the war, a chosen virtue name for one who is building a new self.
  • Single words are canon; save two-word nicknames like Broken Shield for warforged who earned them from comrades.
  • Numbers work best when they are spoken as words (Three, Forty-Two, Unit Seven) rather than written as digits in a fantasy setting.
  • Serial designations like CN-4 or TL-23 are useful for a character who has not yet chosen a name; you can let them rename themselves mid-campaign for a strong roleplay beat.
  • Skip surnames unless the character wants one; a house name (Cannith Twelve) implies ownership, which can be a deliberate plot hook.

Frequently asked questions

How do warforged get their names in Eberron?

Most were named by the soldiers and Cannith artificers around them, usually after a function, tool, weapon, or production number. Some later chose their own names, and a few adopted names given by friends or nicknames earned in battle.

Do warforged have last names?

Almost never. A warforged that uses one is usually referencing the dragonmarked house that built them, a mentor, or a descriptive title. Single names are the norm across all official Eberron material.

Can I use these names for a warforged in a non-Eberron campaign?

Yes. Warforged appear in Forgotten Realms, Ravnica, and homebrew settings, and function-style names like Bulwark or Sentry fit any world where constructs were built for a purpose.

Are number names like Three or Seven common for warforged?

They are one of the classic styles. Warforged from the same production batch were often numbered, and many kept that number as their name because it was the first thing anyone ever called them.
