Robot Name Generator

The word robot comes from the Czech robota, meaning forced labour, coined for Karel Čapek's 1920 play R.U.R. – and a century of fiction since has settled on a handful of ways to name a machine. Designations such as R2-D2, T-800 and RK800 signal a mass-produced product; a name like Data, Ava or Roy Batty signals an android that passes for a person; and acronyms like HAL, JARVIS or WALL-E turn a system's function into something you can say aloud. Warm nicknames – Rosie, Baymax, Sprocket, Beep – mark the robot as a companion rather than a tool.

Good robot names usually borrow from one of a few sources. Engineers and inventors (Tesla, Babbage, Lovelace, Turing) suggest a machine built with reverence for its makers. Greek myth supplies the earliest artificial beings – Talos, Galatea, Pandora – and Hephaestus and Daedalus, who built them. Component and workshop vocabulary (Servo, Diode, Actuator, Ratchet) grounds a name in real hardware, while Greek letters and NATO callsigns give crisp military designations.

When naming a robot for a story, game or an actual machine on your desk, decide first how the humans around it feel about it. A feared war machine gets a heavy noun like Juggernaut or a cold code like X-1000; a household helper gets Otto or Widget; an AI meant to be trusted gets a soft, human-adjacent name like Ada or Iris. The name tells the reader who the robot is to everyone else long before it acts.
