Generate titles for steampunk novels, short stories and serials: adventures like Seven Days Above the Smoke, trade titles like The Boilermaker's Apprentice, gaslight mysteries like The Affair of the Whistling Corpse, automaton stories like Wind Me Again Tomorrow and penny-dreadful serials like Spring-Heeled Sal; or, The Rooftop Avenger.

About steampunk story names

A steampunk title has to signal two things at once: the nineteenth century and a machine that should not exist in it. The usual way is to set a period word beside a mechanical one, so a trade, a rank or a street is paired with brass, boilers, aether or clockwork: The Boilermaker's Apprentice, The Clockwork Heart of Lady Ashdown, A Death in Gaslight Row. The genre borrows from the scientific romances of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells and from the penny dreadfuls, cheap serials sold in weekly parts, and both left their mark on how these stories are named.

The 1,000 titles here cover the main kinds of steampunk story. There are expedition adventures (Seven Days Above the Smoke), trade titles named for a worker, airship tales, gaslight mysteries (The Affair of the Whistling Corpse), automaton stories (Wind Me Again Tomorrow), inventor tales, railway and undersea stories, comedies of manners, factory and strike stories, frontier settings, children's adventures and anthology titles. Some of the penny-dreadful serials keep the old double title with a semicolon and an "or", as in Spring-Heeled Sal; or, The Rooftop Avenger.

Places and people, whether invented like Meridian and Lady Ashdown or real like Limehouse, are there to be swapped for your own.

How to choose steampunk story names

  • Pair one period word with one machine word. Rivets and Rosewater and Mainsprings and Marmalade work because half of each title is not hardware; two machine words in a row read like a parts list.
  • Make a trade title specific. The Wheel Tapper's Ear and The Knocker-Up's Last Window name real jobs of the period, and an unfamiliar trade makes a reader curious before the story starts.
  • Match the title's register to the story's. A comedy of manners can carry The Bishop's Bicycle Explodes, while a quiet literary piece wants something like What the Mainspring Remembers.
  • For a serial, give the series a double title and the parts a plain label, then keep that label. Part the Third: In Which the Boiler Bursts and Installment Nine: The Bridge Gives Way show two styles.
  • Search a title together with the word steampunk before you publish. Clockwork and brass turn up in many titles in this genre, so change a word if a known book already has yours.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a story title sound steampunk?

It joins the Victorian age to impossible machinery in a few words. Period markers do half the work (a Lady, an Inspector, a lamplighter, a named street) and one piece of technology does the rest: an airship, an automaton, a boiler, the aether. The Viscount's Mechanical Valet and Courtship at Ten Thousand Feet both do it without using the word steam at all.

How is this different from the sci-fi story name generator?

The sci-fi story page covers science fiction in general: first contact, colony ships, artificial minds and deep space. This page stays in the age of steam, with gaslit streets, airships, foundries and clockwork people, and it adds forms that belong to the period, such as penny-dreadful serial titles.

How were penny-dreadful serials titled?

Penny dreadfuls were cheap serials sold in weekly parts, and their titles were long and lurid. A common form names the hero or the menace, then adds a semicolon, the word or, and a second title that promises more. The Skeleton Engine; or, Rails of Doom and The Fatal Flywheel; or, Love Among the Looms follow that form.

Can I use these titles for my own story?

Yes, use them as they are or as starting points. Nobody has compared the list with published fiction, so search a title before you submit or publish under it. If a well-known book already uses it, change a word or two.
