Machine Name Generator

Machine names in science fiction come in a handful of distinct registers, and the register you choose tells the reader how the machine sees itself. Model designations (HK-47, TX-9, Series 800, Unit 734) say the machine was manufactured, is one of many, and probably has not been granted personhood. Acronym names (HAL, GLaDOS, SHODAN, TARS, JARVIS) suggest a system built by an institution that later developed a personality; the letters usually stand for something dry, which makes the contrast with a vivid character even sharper. Single-word names (Cortana, Wintermute, Skynet, Deep Thought) are for machines that have become entities in their own right, and they are often mythic or classical (Talos, Argus, Athena, Daedalus) to signal that the AI is old, powerful, or watching.

A fourth register is the affectionate industrial nickname: Bessie, Old Ironsides, Big Rig, Clank, Sprocket. These belong to machines that people work alongside every day, from a mining loader to a beat-up starship. Naming a machine after a component (Servo, Piston, Rivet, Coil) or a pioneer of computing (Turing, Lovelace, Babbage, Hopper) also works well and reads as deliberate rather than random.

The best machine names avoid the trap of stacking technical words with hyphens and numbers, which reads as parts inventory rather than character. Pick a register that matches the machine's status in the story, and if the machine's status changes, let its name change with it: the unit that starts as TX-9 and ends as Nova has an arc built into its name.
