Golem Name Generator

The word golem comes from Hebrew, where it means something unformed or unfinished; the Talmud uses it for Adam before he received a soul. In Jewish folklore a golem is a clay figure animated by sacred letters, most famously the Golem of Prague, said to have been created by Rabbi Judah Loew and often called Yosef or Yossele. Legend holds that the word emet (truth) written on its forehead brought it to life, and erasing the first letter to leave met (dead) stopped it. That tradition gives golem names their oldest layer: Hebrew words, letters of the alphabet, and names taken from the earth itself, such as Adamah.

Fantasy games broadened the idea to constructs of any material. Dungeons & Dragons distinguishes clay, stone, iron, and flesh golems, and later warforged and shield guardians, so many modern golem names are simply the substance (Basalt, Ferrum, Terracotta), a role (Warden, Bulwark, Sentinel), or a designation like Unit Seven or Aleph given by the maker. Flesh golems inherit Mary Shelley's tradition, where the creature has no name and later takes one, hence Adam or Lazarus.

Good golem names feel heavy and deliberate. Because a golem rarely names itself, think about who did: a wizard uses a designation, a village uses a nickname like Old Stonebones, and a rabbi uses a name of blessing.
