Generate lord names that sound like they belong on a charter or a banner: Norman and Saxon given names, estate surnames, seats like 'of Hollowmere', and epithets like 'the Steadfast'. Built for fantasy novels, D&D nobility, CK3 dynasties and historical fiction.
About lord names
A lord's name is really three parts: a given name, a house or family name, and the seat he holds, and real charters used them in a handful of set patterns. The simplest is title plus family name (Lord Roger Mortimer, Lord Hugh Despenser). Medieval English and Norman lords were just as often named for their land (Lord Edric of Thornhaven, Guy de Lusignan), and a formal style puts the man first and the seat last: Bertram Holt, Lord of the Eastmarch. Epithets like the Steadfast, Longshanks or Lackland were earned, not chosen, and were usually the only name people remembered.
The given names that sound most convincingly lordly come from the Norman and Anglo-Saxon stock that filled the peerage for five centuries: Aldric, Godfrey, Ranulf, Fulke, Osric, Everard, Leofric. Pair them with surnames drawn from places, trades or heraldry (Ravenscroft, Coldwater, Fitzalan, Greymoor) and the name carries its own back-story.
This list mixes all of those patterns: English, Scottish, Welsh, French, German, Italian and Norse-flavored lords, seats from Highfell to Saltmarsh, dark-fantasy lords like Lord Corvus Nightwarden, a handful of real historical barons for flavor, and Arthurian names for a romance setting. Pick the pattern that matches how your world hands out titles and use it consistently.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide whether lords in your setting are named for their family or their land, then stick to one form; a world where Lord Ravenscroft and Lord Edric of Thornhaven sit at the same table should have a reason for the difference.
- Use the formal style (Given Surname, Lord of Place) for documents, heralds and introductions, and the short form (Lord Surname) in dialogue, the way real nobles were addressed.
- Give epithets sparingly and let them say something about history: 'the Unbowed' implies a siege survived, 'Lackland' a younger son with no inheritance.
- Match the name's origin to your world's geography: Norse-flavored lords for a cold northern coast, French 'de' names for a conquering court, Welsh or Gaelic names for the hill country.
- Check that the seat name fits the map; a Lord of Saltmarsh should hold land near the sea, and a Lord of the Marches should sit on a border.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 'Lord Surname' and 'Lord Firstname Surname'?
In British usage, a peer is 'Lord Surname' or 'Lord Title' (Lord Mortimer), while 'Lord Firstname Surname' is the courtesy style for the younger sons of dukes and marquesses. Fantasy settings rarely keep that distinction, so use whichever reads best, but be consistent within one story.
Can I use these names for Crusader Kings, Bannerlord or D&D nobles?
Yes. The 'of Place' and 'Lord of Place' forms slot directly into CK3 and Bannerlord dynasties, and the title-plus-surname names work for D&D patrons, quest-givers and villainous nobles. Swap the seat name for one on your own map.
Are any of these real historical lords?
A few dozen are real medieval English and Norman barons (Roger Bigod, William Marshal, Hubert de Burgh) included because they show how authentic lord names were built. The rest are original, though built from real given names and plausible estate surnames.
How do I make a lord's name sound menacing rather than stately?
Use hard consonants and dark imagery in the surname or seat (Nightwarden, Dreadmoor, Blackspire, Mirehollow) and a Latin or Gothic given name such as Corvus, Malakai or Severin. For a benevolent lord, prefer soft, place-based names like Ashgrove, Fairweather or Brightwater.
