Adunaic Name Generator
Númenórean names in the style of Adûnaic
Browse 658 names in the style of Adûnaic, the tongue of Númenor in Tolkien's legendarium, such as Zimrakhâd, Azrabêth and Sakalzagar, Warden of the Coast. A small share are Tolkien's own; the rest are fan constructions from elements he attested.
About adunaic names
Adûnaic is the language J.R.R. Tolkien gave to the Men of Númenor, and it sounds quite unlike his Elvish tongues. Its names are heavy with long circumflex vowels, kh, ph and z, and they usually join two elements: Ar-Pharazôn, Gimilkhâd, Inzilbêth, Zimraphel. The attested vocabulary is small, so any list of Adûnaic names leans on the same few dozen elements, among them gimil (stars), inzil (flower), pharaz (gold), azra (sea), adûn (west), balak (ship) and bâr (lord).
Of the 658 entries here, 24 come from Tolkien's own writings, and the FAQ below names them. Every other entry is a fan construction: attested elements joined in the style of the canon names, or one attested word used as a short name. They are not authentic Adûnaic, and no meaning is claimed for them. No element is coined or respelled to make a new sound. Variety comes from plain English bynames instead, such as of Umbar, the Mariner or Captain of the Guard.
The list mixes royal Ar- names for kings and ruling queens, lords and princes, women's names in -bêth and -phel, sea captains, soldiers, loyalist names in -zîr and -bêl, darker names for Black Númenóreans and corsair lords, ship names in -balak, and short one-word names for common folk.
How to choose adunaic names
- Keep the circumflex. Gimilkhâd and Zimrathôr read as Adûnaic; the same names without the long-vowel marks look like generic fantasy.
- Save the Ar- prefix for a reigning king or a ruling queen. A prince, a captain or a lord uses the bare name, the way Gimilkhâd did as the king's younger son.
- Match the name to the faction: sea, star and gold elements suit the King's Men, names in -zîr such as Azruzîr follow Nimruzîr, the Adûnaic name of Elendil, and Dolgu- (night) or Ugru- (shadow) names suit Umbar.
- Treat a byname as a model, not a rule. Any entry can drop its byname or take a new one, such as a home port or a rank. Arminalêth in a byname is the Adûnaic name of Armenelos, the royal city.
- If the meaning matters, stay with pairs where Tolkien glossed both elements: Gimilbalak joins stars and ship, and Azraroth joins sea and foam.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Adûnaic names from Tolkien's books?
Only 24 come from Tolkien's own writings (The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth): Ar-Adûnakhôr, Ar-Zimrathôn, Ar-Sakalthôr, Ar-Gimilzôr, Ar-Inziladûn, Ar-Pharazôn, Ar-Zimraphel, Ar-Abattârik, Ar-Belzagar, Ar-Balkumagân, Gimilkhâd, Gimilzagar, Inzilbêth, Imrazôr, Adrahil, Imrahil, Ulbar, Zamîn, Nimruzîr, Azrubêl, Aphanuzîr, Abrazân, Rothinzil (a ship) and Gimilnitîr (a title of Varda). Every other entry is a fan construction in the style of Adûnaic, not authentic Adûnaic, and should not be passed off as Tolkien's. This page is a fan resource with no connection to the Tolkien Estate or to any adaptation.
How are Adûnaic names put together?
Most canon names join two elements: Gimilkhâd and Ar-Gimilzôr share gimil (stars), and Inzilbêth and Ar-Inziladûn share inzil (flower). Kings and ruling queens add the prefix Ar-, and the two noblewomen's names in the canon end in -bêth and -phel. The fan constructions here follow the same shapes, as in Pharazkhâd, Azrabêth and Nimirphel.
Which names suit a Black Númenórean or a corsair of Umbar?
Look for the shadow and night elements and the Umbar bynames: Ugrukhâd, Dolguzôr, Aganzagar the Corsair or Nâlutârik, Castellan of Umbar. Any name with a sea element also works for a corsair lord, for example Balakzôr or Azrazagar the Mariner.
Why is this list shorter than most lists on the site?
Adûnaic is a small language. Only a few dozen elements that can go into a name are attested in Tolkien's writings, and this list uses each pairing once instead of coining new elements or respelling old ones. That gives 658 entries, with plain English bynames for variety.
