Quenya Name Generator

Quenya is the "High Elvish" tongue J.R.R. Tolkien built on Finnish and Latin sounds: open vowels, doubled consonants, and words that end in -ë, -o, -a, or a soft -n. It was the language of the Vanyar and Noldor in Valinor, and after the Exile it survived in Middle-earth as a ceremonial language, much like Latin in medieval Europe. That is why the kings of Númenor and Gondor bore Quenya names like Tar-Aldarion, Elendil, and Anárion long after everyone around them spoke Sindarin.

A proper Quenya name is almost always a compound. Tolkien combined a root with a suffix that tells you something about the person: -wë for males (Finwë, Ingwë), -ë or -ië for females (Míriel, Amárië), -ndil meaning "devoted to" (Elendil, star-lover), -dur meaning "servant of" (Isildur), and -tári or -táriel for queens (Elentári). Many Elves also carried several names at once, a father-name, a mother-name, and a chosen name, which is why Maedhros is Nelyafinwë, Maitimo, and Russandol all at once.

The list above draws on canonical Noldorin, Vanyarin, Númenórean, and Gondorian names plus new coinages that follow Tolkien's phonology. Pick a name whose meaning fits the character: Alcarin ("the Glorious") suits a proud lord, Nienna's quiet -na ending suits a mourner, and anything with elen or isil ties a character to stars or moonlight.
