Dúnedain Name Generator

The Dúnedain are the Men of the West in Tolkien's Middle-earth: descendants of Númenor who founded Arnor and Gondor, and whose northern remnant became the grey-cloaked Rangers of the North. Their names are almost always Sindarin, the Elvish tongue of Beleriand, occasionally Quenya for kings and high lords. Aragorn, Arathorn, Arador and Argonui share the royal element ara- (noble, king), a deliberate marker of the Chieftains' descent from Isildur. Other common elements are -dil (friend, devoted to), -dur (servant), -mir (jewel), -gil (star), -dan (maker), -bor (steadfast) and -hir (lord), so Halbarad breaks down as tall tower and Elendil as elf-friend.

Gondor's Dúnedain follow the same rules but with a more formal, Quenya-flavoured tradition among the old kings (Eärnil, Ondoher, Hyarmendacil, Telumehtar), while the Stewards and captains carry Sindarin names like Denethor, Faramir, Beregond and Ecthelion. Númenórean royalty took Quenya throne names with the prefix Tar- (Tar-Aldarion, Tar-Míriel), and the late, rebellious kings used Adûnaic ones with Ar- (Ar-Pharazôn). Women's names tend to end in -wen, -iel, -ien or -eth: Gilraen, Ivorwen, Finduilas, Lothíriel.

Everything here is either drawn from Tolkien's genealogies or built from attested Elvish roots so it sits comfortably beside canon in a Middle-earth Roleplaying campaign, a Lord of the Rings Online character or your own fan fiction.
