About dark knight names

A dark knight is defined by contrast: the name should sound like it once belonged to a respectable sworn sword, then reveal something cold underneath. The oldest template is Arthurian. Malory's black knights are ordinary knights with a colour or a place attached, such as Sir Breunor le Noir, Sir Turquine of the Dolorous Tower and Sir Meliagrant of Gorre, and Mordred is simply a prince of Orkney until he turns. Modern fantasy keeps that shape. A title (Sir, Ser, Dame, Lord, Knight-Captain), a plain period given name (Aldric, Isolde, Roderic, Ulrich) and a surname or epithet that carries the shadow: Blackmere, Ashgrave, Duskhollow, the Forsworn, the Hollow.

The other strong tradition is the nameless knight identified only by what he is or where he haunts: the Black Knight of Carrow Moor, the Knight of Broken Oaths, the Gallows Knight. These work well for Souls-style bosses and for a villain whose real name is a reveal. Single-word names such as Kaltheris, Vaelmourne or Mordrek suit a character whose past is erased entirely.

This list mixes all three registers, drawing given names from Norman, Saxon, German, Welsh, Irish, Iberian and Slavic stock so a dark knight can come from any corner of your map, plus canon Arthurian antagonists for reference.

How to choose dark knight names

  • Keep the given name ordinary for the setting (Edmund, Gisela, Konrad, Owain) and let only the surname or epithet go dark; Ser Edmund Thornwick sounds like a person, Ser Doomblade Shadowkill sounds like a parody.
  • Decide what kind of dark knight you have. A fallen paladin takes an epithet of loss (the Forsworn, the Penitent, the Crownless); a hired black knight takes a place or colour (Breunor le Noir, the Knight of Carrow Moor); a cursed or undead knight takes a cold surname (Coldreach, Gravemoor, Palecrest).
  • Pick surnames from different word families so a whole order of dark knights does not all end in -moor: mix ash, hollow, night, grave, dusk, raven, void, cold, bleak and dire with real English place-name endings like -wick, -croft, -mere and -gate.

Should a dark knight keep a title like Sir or Ser?

Usually yes, because the title is the point: it tells the reader this person was sworn to something and broke or outlived it. Sir and Dame are the standard English forms, Ser is the fantasy variant popularised by A Song of Ice and Fire, and Lord, Castellan or Knight-Captain imply rank beyond knighthood. Drop the title in dialogue once the character has been introduced.
