Generate Nazgûl names for Lord of the Rings fan fiction, tabletop games and Middle-earth campaigns: the mortal names the Nine bore as Númenórean, Easterling and Haradrim lords, plus the Black Speech wraith-names and dread titles they earned in Sauron's service.
About nazgul names
Tolkien names only one of the Nine outright: Khamûl the Easterling, the Shadow of the East and second to the Witch-king of Angmar, whose own name he never gives. That silence is the point. The Nazgûl (Black Speech for Ring-wraiths, Úlairi in Quenya) were great men, kings, sorcerers and warriors, three of them Númenórean lords, who faded under their Nine Rings until even their names were lost. So a Nazgûl name is really two names: the mortal one they were born with, and the title or wraith-name that replaced it.
For the mortal names this generator follows the cultures Tolkien hints at. Númenórean and Black Númenórean names use Adûnaic, the tongue of Ar-Pharazôn, Gimilkhâd and the roleplaying-era Adûnaphel: circumflexed vowels, elements like zimra (jewel), gimil (stars), pharaz (gold), khôr (lord), zagar (sword) and the royal Ar- or Tar- prefix. Easterling names sound like Khamûl, clipped and harsh with kh, zh and û. Haradrim names take long vowels and h-sounds, and a few Quenya forms (Herumor, Fuinur) cover the Black Númenóreans of Umbar.
The wraith-names are Black Speech compounds built from gûl, burz, ghâsh and durb, alongside Sindarin shadow-names and the titles the free peoples gave them: the Black Captain, the Dwimmerlaik, the Morgul-lord. Familiar fan names from the old roleplaying supplements (Er-Mûrazôr, Dwar of Waw, Hoarmûrath) are included too.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give each wraith a mortal name and an earned title: Zimrakhôr the Pale reads as a fallen king, where Zimrakhôr alone is just a Númenórean. The pairing is what makes a Nazgûl feel like a Nazgûl.
- Match the name to the origin Tolkien implies: Adûnaic with circumflexes (Azrubêl, Gimilzagar) for the three Númenórean lords, Khamûl-style names (Ulkhâm, Tarkhûl) for Easterlings, long-vowelled Haradrim names (Sahrân, Jalûd) for the South.
- Use Ar- or Tar- sparingly; those prefixes mark reigning Númenórean kings, so only a wraith who once held a throne (or claimed one) should carry them.
- Black Speech wraith-names are best kept short and guttural, two elements at most (Burzgûl, Ghâshnazg); longer strings start to sound like orc chants rather than names.
- In a campaign, let the players learn the mortal name late. The dread of the Nazgûl comes from anonymity, and a name discovered in an old Gondorian record makes a good reward.
Frequently asked questions
What are the real names of the nine Nazgûl?
Tolkien names only Khamûl, the Easterling who served as second-in-command and commanded Dol Guldur. The Witch-king of Angmar is known by title alone. Names such as Er-Mûrazôr, Dwar, Ji Indûr, Akhôrahil, Hoarmûrath, Adûnaphel, Ren and Ûvatha come from the old MERP roleplaying supplements and are fan canon, not Tolkien's.
What language should a Nazgûl name be in?
Their mortal names belong to their birth cultures: Adûnaic for Númenóreans (three of the Nine were Númenórean lords), Easterling or Haradrim tongues for those from Rhûn and Harad. Nazgûl itself is Black Speech, so their wraith-names and epithets fit that harsh register, while the free peoples used Sindarin, Westron or Rohirric titles like the Dwimmerlaik.
Can I use these names for a Lord of the Rings game or fan fiction?
Yes. The invented names here are free to use and are designed to fit Tolkien's phonologies for tabletop campaigns set in Middle-earth, LOTRO-style characters or original wraiths in fan fiction. Canonical names like Khamûl remain the property of the Tolkien Estate's setting.
Were any of the Nazgûl women?
Tolkien never says; he describes them as 'kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old' without specifying. The MERP supplements made Adûnaphel a woman, and this generator includes feminine Adûnaic forms ending in -phel and -bêth so you can follow that tradition if you wish.
