Names in the style of Glen Cook's fantasy novels

About the Black Company names
The Black Company is Glen Cook's fantasy novel series about a mercenary company and the sorcerers it serves and fights, told through the Company's own Annals. Many of its best-known characters never use a birth name. The soldiers answer to one plain word, a trade, a trait or a joke (Croaker, Goblin, Silent, Pawnbroker), and the great sorcerers hide behind epithets, because a wizard whose true name is known can be stripped of power.
This list of 1,000 follows both habits. The Company's side holds camp nicknames (Stitch, Kettle, Three Coppers), plain first names of the kind some men keep (Otto, Hagop, Levon), ranks alone or with a nickname (The Quartermaster, Sergeant Bootheel), annalists, physicians and standard-bearers (Annalist Inkpot, Surgeon Hacksaw), camp followers, recruits, and small-time Company wizards (Hobgoblin, Tap-Tap, Evil-Eye).
The sorcerers take a little more than half of the list: one-word epithets in the manner of the Taken (Ashwhisper, Lanternjaw, Tidebinder), bynames with "The" (The Gravewright, The Drowned Man), shadow compounds like those of the Shadowmasters (Shadowcaster, Noonshadow), and soft single words of the kind rebel wizards and the newly Taken go by (Vigil, Winnower, Lament). A small share are names from the books themselves, listed in the questions below. The rest were written for this page, and nothing here is official.
How to choose the Black Company names
- Give a soldier one word and let it stand. Stitch, Kettle and Gristle need no surname, and a nickname works best when nobody explains where it came from.
- Keep the true name secret. A sorcerer goes by the epithet alone, such as Ashwhisper or The Gravewright, and the buried birth name can drive a whole plot.
- Use rank instead of a name for officers. The Captain and The Lieutenant are enough in a small company; add a nickname only when there are two of a rank, as with Sergeant Bootheel and Sergeant Nosebleed.
- Match the name to its bearer's weight. Small-time Company wizards suit small, comic names such as Tap-Tap or Hobgoblin, while a great power needs something people fear to say aloud, such as Dreamstealer.
- Mix a few plain first names (Otto, Levon, Anton) into a roster so that not every man in the ranks is a joke.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names taken from The Black Company books?
Most are not. A small share are names from the novels, kept as models of the style: Croaker, One-Eye, Goblin, Silent, Raven, Elmo, Darling, Candy, Sleepy, Pawnbroker, Otto, Hagop, The Captain, The Lieutenant, The Old Man, The Lady, The Dominator, Soulcatcher, The Limper, Shapeshifter, Stormbringer, The Howler, The Hanged Man, The Faceless Man, Moonbiter, Nightcrawler, Bonegnasher, Widowmaker, Whisper, Feather, Journey, Raker, Shadowspinner, Longshadow, Moonshadow and Stormshadow. The rest were written for this page in the same manner, though a plain word may happen to match a minor name somewhere in a long series. This page is not affiliated with Glen Cook or his publishers.
What are the Taken, and how are they named?
In the novels the Taken are powerful sorcerers who were defeated and bound into the service of a greater one. Each is known by an epithet and never by a birth name: Soulcatcher, Shapeshifter and The Limper in the books, and names such as Ashwhisper, Tidebinder and The Gravewright among the new ones in this list.
Why do the characters use nicknames instead of real names?
Men who join the Company leave their pasts behind, and most go by whatever the others call them. For sorcerers it is a matter of survival, since a true name can be used to strip a wizard of power. That is why the list gives soldiers plain words like Stitch and Halfpint and gives sorcerers epithets like Hollowface.
Can I use these names for a tabletop campaign or my own story?
Yes. The newly written names suit any grim mercenary setting: a roster might run The Quartermaster, Sergeant Bootheel, Annalist Inkpot, Kettle and Three Coppers, with Lanternjaw as the sorcerer they answer to. For work you plan to publish, leave out the names that come from the novels, which are listed above.
