About warband names

A warband is smaller and rougher than an army. It is a few dozen to a few hundred fighters bound to a chieftain by oath, loot or fear, and its name works like a battle cry rather than a regimental title. Historical war bands were named for their leader or their home: the Jomsvikings, Harald's housecarls, the gallowglass of a clan, the reivers of a valley. That formula still works best in fiction, which is why Varg's Ravagers or Grimmund's Hundred sound more lived-in than anything with Eternal or Shadow in it.

Tabletop games added their own conventions. Warhammer orc and Chaos warbands take names from a totem, a wound or a boast: the Bloody Hand, Skullsplitters, the Flayed Ones. Mount & Blade and Battle Brothers players favor plain nouns with an edge, like the Iron Horde or the Long Knives. Grimdark fiction leans on place plus animal (Wolves of the Ashen Moor, Crows of Hollin Vale) and on religious-sounding brotherhoods (Brethren of the Flayed Hand, Sons of the Ninth Pyre).

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the band after its founder or a dead hero (Halvar's Hearthguard, Sons of Torvald); it instantly implies history and a chain of command.
  • Use a totem animal or a single grisly trophy (the Black Totem, the Scalptakers) rather than piling up adjectives. One hard image beats three.
  • Tie the warband to a place your players will recognize (Raiders of the Whispering Pass, Wolves of the Bitter Shore) so the name doubles as a hook for where they operate.
  • Match the register to the culture: orcs and beastmen get blunt compounds (Ironjaw, Gorehowl), Norse and Celtic bands get oath and kin words (Oath-Kin of Hrolf, Wolfcoats of Thrym), Chaos cults get brethren and ninefold language.
  • Give a defeated or disgraced band a bitter name (the Sundered Oath, the Shieldless, the Thrice-Broken) to signal backstory in two words.

What is the difference between a warband and an army?

A warband is a small, personal force of roughly 20 to a few hundred fighters sworn to one leader, usually raiding or skirmishing rather than holding ground. An army is a larger organized force with formal units. Warband names are therefore personal and boastful (Varg's Ravagers) while army names tend to be numbered or regional.

How should I name an orc or Chaos warband for Warhammer?

Keep it blunt and physical. Orc warbands use crushing compounds and boasts (Skullsplitters, Ironjaw Warband, Gorrak's Tuskers); Chaos warbands use cult language like Brethren, Chosen, Sons of, and numbers sacred to their god (the Ninefold Spear, Sons of the Ninth Pyre).
