About chaos warband names

Chaos warband names in Warhammer 40,000 follow a handful of recognisable shapes. The oldest are plural epithets that read like a Chapter name turned sour: Red Corsairs, Brazen Beasts, Steel Cobras, Dragon Warriors, Violators. A second group names the band after its leader or its god (Hakanor's Reavers, Skyrar's Dark Wolves, Hounds of Abaddon, Sons of Malice), and a third uses a definite article and a single loaded word that sounds like a verdict: The Purge, The Scourged, The Cleaved, The Foresworn. Legion splinters usually keep a trace of the parent, so Iron Warriors offshoots talk about siege and grand companies, Death Guard bands about plague and decay, Thousand Sons cabals about glass, nines and change.

The strongest names imply a history. Crimson Slaughter was once the Crimson Sabres; the Company of Misery and the Sons of Vengeance wear their grievance in the name. A renegade Chapter that fell recently should still sound Imperial with one word corrupted, while a ten-thousand-year-old host can be as baroque as the Apostles of Minthras or the Oracles of Change.

This list mixes canon warbands and Legions with original names in every style: Undivided raiders, god-marked cults, Black Crusade hosts and small Kill Team-sized bands.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the warband's origin first. Fresh renegades keep a Chapter-style name with one corrupt word (Knights of Blood, Soul Drinkers); ancient Legion splinters can use cult and covenant language freely.
  • Match the vocabulary to the patron god: skulls, brass and blood for Khorne; rot, plague and flies for Nurgle; glass, nine, change and cabal for Tzeentch; perfection, rapture and excess for Slaanesh. Undivided bands get darker, vaguer words like ruin, malice and the Eye.
  • Leader-named bands (Hakanor's Reavers, Blackheart's Chosen) work well for small Kill Teams and narrative campaigns because the warlord's name and the warband's fate are tied together.
  • Avoid stacking adjectives. Canon names are rarely more than two or three words, and the best single-word names (Violators, Tormentors, Purge) land harder than four-word titles.
  • Check the name against your colour scheme and iconography: a warband called the Brass Scorpions should look like brass scorpions on the tabletop, and a name that hints at a symbol is easier to freehand onto shoulder pads.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Warhammer 40k Chaos warbands?

Some are. The list opens with canon warbands and Legions such as the Black Legion, Red Corsairs, Crimson Slaughter, The Purge, Brazen Beasts and Sons of Malice so you have reference points, but the large majority are original names written in the same styles, so you can use them for your own army without clashing with published lore.

What is the difference between a Chaos warband and a Traitor Legion?

The nine Traitor Legions are the original Heresy-era forces. A warband is any smaller Chaos Space Marine force, whether it split from a Legion, fell as a loyalist Chapter, or formed around a single warlord. Most Chaos armies on the tabletop represent a warband rather than an entire Legion, which is why warband names matter so much.

How do I name a warband dedicated to a specific Chaos god?

Borrow that god's imagery. Khornate bands use blood, brass, skulls and the number eight; Nurgle bands use plague, rot, flies and seven; Tzeentchian cabals use change, glass, nine and sorcery; Slaaneshi hosts use perfection, rapture, song and six. Undivided warbands usually reach for ruin, malice, the Eye or the warlord's own name.

Can I use these names for a renegade Chapter or a Kill Team?

Yes. Names shaped like Chapter names (Knights of Blood, Soul Drinkers, Steel Cobras) fit a recently fallen Chapter, while leader-named and cult-style names fit a small Kill Team or a narrative campaign warband. Pair any of them with the Chaos Space Marine name generator to fill out the warlord and his Chosen.
