Generate bandit group names for Wild West outlaws, medieval highwaymen, desert raiders, and fantasy brigands. Names range from historical-sounding gangs to the kind of bands you would meet on the road in Skyrim or Red Dead.
About bandit group names
Real bandit gangs were almost never called anything grand. They were named after their leader (the James-Younger Gang, the Dalton Gang, the Doolin-Dalton Gang), the place they hid out (the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang), or a nickname given by newspapers and lawmen (the Wild Bunch, the Innocents). Medieval and early-modern robbers were labeled by the roads and heaths they worked, which is why English history has "the Hounslow Heath highwaymen" and why the term "wolfshead" was used for outlaws who could be killed on sight.
When you name a fictional bandit group, decide who is doing the naming. A gang that names itself picks something proud or intimidating: the Red Hand, the Iron Teeth, the Free Riders. A gang named by frightened villagers or a sheriff's wanted poster gets something plainer and more descriptive: the Blackwater Boys, the Ridge Runners, the Two-Bit Bandits. Both feel authentic, and mixing the two styles across a setting makes it feel lived-in.
The list above blends Wild West gangs, English highwaymen, desert and wasteland raiders, and fantasy brigands, so you can pull names for a Red Dead campaign, a D&D roadside encounter, a Western novel, or a post-apocalyptic setting. Swap in your own place names to tie a gang to your map.
Tips for choosing a name
- Anchor the gang to a place on your map, such as a creek, gulch, heath, or crossroads; "the Coldwater Bunch" feels real in a way "the Shadow Raiders" does not.
- For a leader-driven gang, use the surname plus Gang or Boys, the way real Western outfits were named.
- Give the group a physical marker (red hoods, painted faces, notched blades) and let that become the name.
- Keep fantasy brigands humble; small roadside bands should have plainer names than the kingdom-spanning thieves' guilds.
- In a wasteland setting, lean on scrap, salt, dust, and rust rather than generic dark or shadow words.
Frequently asked questions
How were real outlaw gangs named?
Usually after the leader or family (Dalton Gang, James-Younger Gang), a hideout (Hole-in-the-Wall Gang), or a nickname coined by the press (the Wild Bunch). Very few gangs chose their own dramatic name.
What is the difference between a bandit, a highwayman, and a brigand?
Bandit is the general term for a robber operating in a gang, often in rural areas. Highwayman specifically means a mounted robber who held up travelers on roads, common in 17th- and 18th-century Britain. Brigand comes from the Italian brigante and usually describes armed rural bands, sometimes with a political edge.
Are these names good for D&D or Skyrim-style bandit camps?
Yes. Names like the Wolfshead Band, the Grey Cloaks, or the Bleakmoor Reavers fit low-level fantasy encounters, and you can rename the location to match your campaign map.
Can I use these names in a published book or game?
The names here are free to use. A few reference real historical terms (Regulators, Bushwhackers, Redlegs), which are public domain, but check that your specific gang name is not already a trademarked title.
