Mercenary Band Name Generator
Sellsword bands and free companies for hire
Generate mercenary band names in the tradition of the White Company, the Catalan Company, and Glen Cook's Black Company: fantasy and medieval sellsword outfits with grit, history, and a price. Built for D&D parties, fantasy novelists, and Mount & Blade or Battle Brothers players.
About mercenary band names
The great mercenary bands of the Middle Ages were called free companies, and their names came from the field rather than a founding charter. The White Company was named for its bright polished armor, the Catalan Company for where its men came from, the Tard-Venus (Late Comers) for arriving after a treaty had left them unemployed, and the Ecorcheurs (Skinners) for what they did to the countryside. Later companies borrowed a badge from their captain's banner: the Company of the Star, the Company of the Hat, the Company of Saint George.
Fantasy fiction follows the same instincts. Glen Cook's Black Company, George R. R. Martin's Golden Company, Second Sons, and Brave Companions, and the outfits in Battle Brothers and Mount & Blade all lean toward plain, blunt names: a color, an animal, a wound, a joke about pay or birth order. A sellsword band that calls itself the Broken Blades or the Nine Fingers sounds like it has survived something. Bands that call themselves the Immortal Shadow Legion generally do not.
This list mixes historical free companies, Martin- and Cook-flavored names, badge-of-the-captain names, and blunt soldiers' humor so you can field a dozen rival bands that each feel distinct. Also here: captain-named bands, gunpowder and siege specialists, sea and river crews, dwarf and orc hirelings, plus ration and pay jokes.
How to choose mercenary band names
- Prefer plain, earned-sounding names. A color, an animal, an injury, or a bit of gallows humor beats a string of epic adjectives.
- Name the band after its captain's banner or badge (the Company of the Hat) so the name and heraldry match.
- Give the band a second name others use, since employers might say the Company of Saint George while peasants say the Skinners.
- Reflect the band's specialty: Longbows of Ashwood or Sellspears tells a hiring lord exactly what he is paying for.
- Small bands sound better with a number or a body part (the Twenty, the Half Hands); large hosts earn a Company or Banner name.
Frequently asked questions
What were real medieval mercenary bands called?
Free companies, routiers, or condottieri companies. Famous examples include the White Company under John Hawkwood, the Catalan Company, the Great Company, and the Company of the Star, all active in the fourteenth century.
How do fantasy mercenary bands usually get their names?
Usually from something concrete: a color of armor or banner, an animal on the captain's badge, a shared origin, or a grim in-joke. The Black Company, the Golden Company, and the Second Sons all follow this pattern.
Can I use these mercenary band names for my D&D party or novel?
Yes. Names of historical companies are public history, and the invented ones are free to use in games, fiction, and other creative projects. A few names come from published fantasy novels, and nothing on the list was checked against trademarks, so look into a name before you publish under it.
What's the difference between a mercenary band and a mercenary company?
In practice they overlap. Band suggests a smaller, looser group of a few dozen fighters, while company implies a larger organized force with a captain, contracts, and its own banner. Many bands grew into companies as they took bigger contracts.
