Generate army names modeled on how real and fictional forces are actually designated: numbered field armies, named regiments, honorific legions, and grand hosts. Built for wargamers, fantasy authors, and worldbuilders who need a force that sounds like it has a history.

About army names

Real armies are rarely named for how scary they sound. Historically, most field armies took their names from geography (the Army of the Potomac, the Army of the Rhine), from a number (the Seventh Army, Legio IX), or from their sponsor (the King's Own, the Emperor's Guard). Nicknames like the Desert Rats, the Screaming Eagles, or the Old Contemptibles came later, earned in a campaign and adopted with pride. That layering of an official designation plus an earned nickname is what makes a fictional army feel like it has served somewhere.

Fantasy and sci-fi armies borrow the same patterns. A legion named for its emblem (Legion of the Wyvern), a host named for its region (the Host of the Northern Marches), or a corps named for its founder all read as plausible. Structure matters too: an army is made of corps, divisions, brigades, regiments, and companies, and each tier can carry its own name. A single fantasy realm might field the Grand Army of Valdoria, whose Third Corps includes the Ashen Battalions and the Ravenguard.

The list below mixes historically flavored designations, honorific and heraldic legions, and darker hosts suited to villains and undead. Use them as complete names or as a template, swapping in your own place names, house names, and numbers.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pair an official designation with a nickname: the Twelfth Imperial Army, known to its enemies as the Iron Column.
  • Name armies after places, rulers, or numbers for realism; save beast and color names for elite regiments and guard units.
  • Match the era. Legions and cohorts suit classical settings, regiments and brigades suit gunpowder eras, and army groups fit modern warfare.
  • Give the enemy army a name in a different style than the hero's army so readers can tell them apart at a glance.
  • Check that the name still works when shortened, since soldiers will call the Army of the Northern Marches simply the Marchers.

Frequently asked questions

How are real armies usually named?

Most historical armies were named after a region or river of operation, a sequential number, or a sovereign. Informal nicknames such as the Old Contemptibles or the Big Red One were earned in the field and later became semi-official.

What is the difference between an army, a legion, and a regiment?

An army is the largest field formation, typically tens of thousands of troops made of corps and divisions. A Roman legion was roughly 5,000 men, and a regiment is a smaller unit of a few hundred to a few thousand soldiers, often with a strong named identity.

Can I use these army names in my novel or game?

Yes. The names are free to use in fiction, tabletop campaigns, video games, and other creative projects. Some entries reference historical units, so if you want a wholly original force, adapt the structure with your own place or house names.

How do I name a fantasy army so it doesn't sound generic?

Anchor it in your world. Use a location, a founding ruler, a heraldic beast, or a defining event rather than a generic adjective. The Legion of the Broken Spear implies a story; Shadow Army does not.
