Treant Name Generator

Treants are the walking, thinking trees of Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and countless fantasy settings, and their names carry the weight of centuries. A treant name usually does one of two things: it describes the tree itself (Oakenheart, Gnarlroot, Hollowtrunk, Greymantle) or it records something the treant has witnessed or endured (Ashgrieve of the Fallen Wood, Ravelbough Twiceburned, Corwin of the Twelve Rings). Both styles work best when the words are heavy and unhurried, favoring long vowels and hard consonants over anything quick or playful.

The convention owes a lot to Tolkien's Ents. Treebeard, Quickbeam, and Leaflock are English "short names" standing in for Entish names that would take a day to say. Many game masters borrow that idea: give a treant a short use-name for the party, then hint that its full name is a recitation of everything that has happened to it. Botanical Latin (Quercus, Fraxinus, Salix, Taxus) is another good source: old and formal, yet it still means oak, ash, willow, and yew.

When picking a name, match it to the treant's species and temperament. Oaks and elders suit patient wardens; blackthorns, yews, and wormwood suit bitter or corrupted treants; willows and birches suit gentler, more talkative ones. Adding a title like the Sleeper, the Vigilant, or Twiceburned tells the reader what kind of history the creature is carrying.
