Tree Name Generator

People have been naming individual trees for as long as they have gathered under them. Real famous trees show the patterns: a personal name (Methuselah, the 4,800-year-old bristlecone; General Sherman, the largest sequoia; Hyperion, the tallest redwood), a role plus a species (Major Oak, Fortingall Yew, Lone Cypress), a place (Sycamore Gap Tree, Tree of Ténéré, Angel Oak after Angel Plantation), or an event that happened beneath it (Treaty Oak, Emancipation Oak, Anne Frank Tree). Village trees often just get an honorific: The Elder, Old Bess, Grandmother Willow.

Fantasy borrows all of these and adds the world tree, a cosmic axis with a name that sounds ancient and slightly untranslatable. Norse myth has Yggdrasil, Tolkien has Telperion and Laurelin, Warcraft has Teldrassil and Nordrassil, Game of Thrones has the weirwoods with their heart trees, and Hindu tradition has Ashvattha and Kalpavriksha. Naming a made-up world tree usually means either a real mythic name, an invented word with heavy consonants and an -il or -assil ending, or a plain descriptive title (Tree of Souls, Hometree, Heart Tree).

The list also includes tree words that work as character names (Rowan, Aspen, Hazel, Linden, Sylvan, Forrest, Ashby) and species names for describing a forest, since a story that mentions the copper beech by the gate feels more real than one with generic "trees."
