Fantasy Creature Name Generator

Fantasy creature names come from real folklore far more often than from pure invention. The staples of any monster manual (gryphon, chimera, hydra, basilisk) are Greek; trolls, draugr and the kraken are Norse; kelpies, redcaps and the dullahan are Celtic; kitsune, tengu and kappa are Japanese yokai; the rakshasa and garuda are Indian; and the lamassu, ziz and pazuzu are Mesopotamian. Each tradition has its own sound, and pulling from several gives a bestiary far more texture than another shadow-something.

Original creatures usually follow one of two patterns. Folk names describe what the thing does or where it lives, like Jenny Greenteeth, Black Shuck, Corpse Candle or Marrow Hound. Scholarly names sound like a naturalist catalogued them, like Catoblepas, Bonnacon or Nightgaunt, often with a Latin or Greek ring. Medieval bestiaries mixed the two freely and so should you: a peasant calls it a Mirewalker, the wizard's grimoire calls it something in dog-Latin, and both are right.

The list here leans on named species and types rather than individual monsters, so it works as a menu for populating a region, a dungeon or an in-world encyclopedia. Pair a real mythological creature with a fresh regional twist and it will feel both familiar and new.
