Mythical Creatures Name Generator

Mythical creature names fall into two families. The first is the species or type: griffin, kelpie, tengu, rakshasa, wendigo. These words are usually the surviving fragment of an older language, and their sound carries their culture with them: the hard k and t of Japanese yokai (Kappa, Tengu, Nekomata), the liquid vowels of Sanskrit (Garuda, Airavata, Sharabha), the guttural clusters of Norse (Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg). The second family is the individual beast with a proper name, such as Fenrir, Ladon, Scylla, Bakunawa or the Nemean Lion, creatures that appear once in a story and become as famous as any hero.

Good creature naming borrows the phonetics of the culture the creature comes from. Slavic monsters tend to end in -a or -y (Rusalka, Kikimora, Vodyanoy); Celtic beasts pile up soft consonants and Gaelic spellings (Each Uisge, Cu Sith, Nuckelavee); Mesoamerican names favor tz, tl and x (Ahuizotl, Camazotz). Descriptive epithets are also traditional: the Colchian Dragon, the Cretan Bull, Ammut the Devourer.

When you need an original creature for a bestiary or campaign, take a real name from the list as a template and change one or two sounds, or pair a real type with a new epithet. The result feels rooted in folklore rather than invented in a vacuum, which is exactly what makes players and readers believe in it.
