Generate druid names drawn from real Celtic (Irish, Welsh, Gaulish) roots and fantasy grove-keeper epithets, ready for D&D druids, Wildemount and Forgotten Realms characters, or historical fiction set in Iron Age Britain.
About druid names
The word druid comes from the Celtic peoples of Iron Age Gaul, Britain and Ireland, so the most convincing druid names are Celtic ones. Irish myth gives us Cathbad, the druid of Ulster, Amergin the poet-druid of the Milesians, Mug Ruith the blind sun-druid, and the sorceress Tlachtga. Welsh tradition offers Taliesin, Myrddin (the original Merlin) and Cerridwen with her cauldron of inspiration. Roman writers even recorded a real Gaulish druid, Diviciacus of the Aedui, who was a friend of Cicero.
For a fantasy druid, the usual pattern is a Celtic given name (Aoife, Rhiannon, Oisín, Gwydion) paired with an earned nature epithet that describes the character's bond with the wild: Oakenheart, Thornroot, Ravenwatch, Salmonleap. Circle of the Moon druids often take animal-flavoured epithets such as Bearclaw or Stagborn, while Circle of the Land druids suit tree, herb and stone names like Hazelwise or Starmoss. Some druids abandon their birth name entirely and answer only to a plant: Rowan, Yarrow, Sloe, Bracken.
This list mixes historical and mythological druids, real Irish and Welsh given names with correct spelling, paired fantasy names, and single-word plant names, so you can find something for a hedge-witch NPC, a stoic Wildemount elder, or a player character in your next D&D campaign.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the given name first from the Celtic list, then add an epithet only if the character has earned it in play; young druids rarely have one yet.
- Match the epithet to the druid's subclass: animals for Circle of the Moon, trees and herbs for Circle of the Land, stars and dreams for Circle of Stars or Dreams.
- Check pronunciation of Irish names before the session (Sadhbh is 'Sive', Tadhg is 'Tige', Niamh is 'Neev') so the table says it consistently.
- For non-Celtic settings, keep the structure but swap the given name for one from the local culture and keep the nature epithet.
- Single plant names such as Rowan, Hazel or Wren work well for druids who have renounced their old life or serve as reclusive hermits.
Frequently asked questions
What are some real historical druid names?
Diviciacus of the Aedui is the only druid named by a contemporary Roman source, but Irish and Welsh literature preserve many druid names including Cathbad, Amergin, Mug Ruith, Tlachtga, Bodhmall and Myrddin.
Do D&D druids need Celtic names?
No. In D&D a druid is a class, not a culture, so an elf, dwarf or tabaxi druid should have a name from their own people. Celtic-flavoured names are simply the most common choice for human druids because of the class's real-world roots.
How do I name a female druid?
Irish and Welsh names such as Aoife, Sadhbh, Rhiannon, Branwen and Elowen work beautifully, optionally followed by a nature epithet like Willowbreeze or Owlwing. Mythological figures Cerridwen and Tlachtga are also strong picks.
Can I use these druid names commercially?
Yes. Historical names, real given names and the original epithets here are not owned by anyone; only avoid lifting named characters from published settings such as Critical Role or the Forgotten Realms.
