Generate chimera names drawn from Greek myth (Typhon's brood, Lycian monsters), Greek-rooted constructions like Trikephalos and Pyrrhaine, and menacing individual names for D&D, Pathfinder, and Fullmetal Alchemist-style alchemical hybrids. Includes both the classic three-headed beast and other fused creatures.

About chimera names

The original Chimera was a single monster: a fire-breathing lion with a goat's head rising from its back and a serpent for a tail, born of Typhon and Echidna and killed by Bellerophon on the winged horse Pegasus. Because it was one creature, its name in Greek (Chimaira, literally 'she-goat') doubled as a proper noun. Modern fantasy turned 'chimera' into a species and a category, so a chimera today might be a D&D lair monster, a Pathfinder beast, an alchemical fusion in Fullmetal Alchemist, or any patchwork of animals a writer can dream up.

That gives you several naming registers to choose from. Greek-rooted constructions like Trikephalos (three-headed) or Aigolykaina (goat-wolf) sound like they belong on an ancient vase. Latin forms such as Bestia Triformis or Ignivora suit a bestiary or a scholar's notes. Blunt English kennings like Cinderthroat, Threetongue, or the Goat That Roars capture how frightened villagers would describe the thing. And clinical labels like Specimen Theta or Splice fit laboratory-made hybrids.

Many of the world's other composite creatures are here too, from Egypt's Ammit and Japan's Nue to the Tarasque and the Wolpertinger, because a chimera in the broad sense is any monster made of mismatched parts.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether your chimera is a unique monster or one of a species; unique beasts deserve a proper name and epithet (Ashkharos, the Lycian Blaze), while species members can carry descriptive names.
  • Use Greek roots for a mythic feel: kephale (head), pyr (fire), leon (lion), aix (goat), ophis (snake), tri (three) can be combined into dozens of authentic-sounding names.
  • For an alchemical or laboratory chimera, cold designations (Subject Kappa-Nine, Graft) are more disturbing than monstrous names.
  • Name the beast after what its victims notice first, whether that is the goat's bleat, the smell of smoke, or the fact that it has three voices.
  • In D&D, a chimera's name can hint at which head dominates its personality; a cunning dragon-headed chimera reads differently from a lion-led brute.

Frequently asked questions

What was the original Chimera's name?

In Greek myth the monster is simply called Chimaira, which means 'she-goat' and refers to the goat head on its back. Hesiod names her a child of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of Cerberus, Orthrus, and the Lernaean Hydra.

How do I make up a Greek-sounding chimera name?

Combine Greek roots for the creature's parts and traits: tri (three), kephale (head), pyr (fire), leon (lion), aix or aigo (goat), ophis (serpent), drakon (dragon). Trikephalos, Pyrrhaine, and Leontokerata are all built this way.

Are these names good for a D&D or Pathfinder chimera?

Yes. Give a lair chimera a proper name and epithet so players remember it, and use the descriptive English names for chimeras that appear as random encounters. All original names are free to use in home games and published modules.

Does chimera mean any hybrid creature?

In modern usage yes; biologists use 'chimera' for organisms with mixed cells, and fantasy uses it for almost any fused beast. Strictly, the mythological Chimera is the lion-goat-serpent, while creatures like the manticore, griffin, and sphinx are separate hybrids with their own names.
