Generate time traveler names for fiction, games and RPGs: full names that sound slightly out of era, agency ranks and codenames, epithets like The Woman Who Was Late, and travelers whose surnames carry a clue such as Morrow, Yearsley or Chronister.

About time traveler names

A time traveler name does one of two jobs. Either it sounds faintly wrong for wherever the character has landed, which tells readers this person is not from around here, or it carries a wink about time itself. The first kind is built by mixing eras: a Victorian first name on a modern surname (Cornelius Daye, Wilhelmina Morrow), a classical name with a global surname (Lucius Okonkwo, Beatrix Nakamura), or something clipped and futuristic next to something old (Nyra Voss, Zevi Orinth). The second kind hides the clue in a surname that is also a real one, such as Morrow, Yearsley, Weekes, Sexton, Hourigan, Tickner or Calender, so it passes in conversation but rewards the attentive reader.

Time travel stories love designations and epithets. Agencies and bureaus assign ranks and call signs (Agent Meridian, Courier Seven, Warden of the Loop, Pathfinder Zero), while folk legend and gossip give travelers titles like The Woman Who Was Late, The Gentleman from Later or The Man Who Missed His Own Funeral. Travelers who have lived too long collect odd bynames as well: Oswin Twice-Returned, Kestrel of No Fixed Year, Hesper Longago.

Mix freely. A character can carry a plain birth name, an agency call sign and a nickname the locals gave her, and the gap between them tells a story on its own.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide where the character was born before naming them. A traveler from 1890 who lands in 2090 should have a name that sounds old to everyone around them (Ambrose, Theodora, Percival), and the reverse is true for a visitor from the far future arriving in the past.
  • Use a surname with a hidden time meaning sparingly. One Morrow, Yearsley or Chronister in a cast is a clever touch; a whole bureau of people named Clock and Hourglass turns the story into a pun.
  • Give agency travelers two names: the one on their birth certificate and a call sign (Agent Halcyon, Courier Seven, Operative Dusk). Which one other characters use tells the reader who trusts them.
  • Epithets work best when they describe a specific incident: The Woman Who Was Late, The Man Who Missed His Own Funeral, The Heir of the Unbuilt House. Vague titles like The Traveler are forgettable.
  • For a comic or folk-tale register, alliterative nicknames (Tick-Tock Tolliver, Backwards Bess, Leap Year Lottie) read as a village's name for the odd stranger who keeps turning up at the wrong century.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like a time traveler's?

Contrast. A name that mixes eras (Cornelius Daye, Nyra Voss, Lucius Okonkwo) or pairs an ordinary name with an odd byname (Oswin Twice-Returned, Kestrel of No Fixed Year) signals that the character does not quite belong to the present. Surnames with a quiet time meaning, like Morrow or Tickner, add a second layer.

What are good codenames for a time travel agency?

Use a rank plus a word for a moment, place or role in time: Agent Meridian, Courier Seven, Warden of the Loop, Operative Dusk, Pathfinder Zero, Archivist Halima Sarr. Numbers suggest a roster of travelers and imply the ones who came before.

Can I use these names for a time travel RPG or tabletop campaign?

Yes. The full names suit player characters and NPCs from any era, the epithets make good titles for recurring mysterious figures, and the ranks and call signs fit a bureau, temporal police or chrononaut corps as an organization the party joins or opposes.

Should a time traveler's name change between eras?

Often, yes, and it is a useful storytelling device. A traveler might be Wilhelmina Morrow in 1905, Billie Morrow in 1975 and Mina in 2150. Keeping one stable element (a surname, an initial, a nickname) lets readers track her while the shifts show how long she has been moving.
