Generate dimension names for multiverse stories, comics, and tabletop settings, from clinical designations like Earth-2149 to evocative planes such as the Hollow Meridian. Built for writers and game masters who need alternate realities that feel distinct at a glance.
About dimension names
Fiction names alternate dimensions in three broad ways, and each signals something to the reader. Catalog designations - Earth-616, Universe C-137, Reality 4-4-1 - suggest an organized multiverse with someone (a Watcher, a Council of Ricks, a Time Variance Authority) keeping the books, and they let you imply thousands of worlds without describing any. Definite-article place names like The Upside Down, The Shadowfell, or The Negative Zone treat the dimension as a single vast location, and the word after 'The' does the heavy lifting: usually a physical metaphor for what is wrong there (upside, shadow, negative). Finally, proper nouns such as Xen, Zothique, or Tenebrae work best for planes that have their own inhabitants and cultures, since they feel like countries rather than concepts.
Good dimension names are short and concrete. 'The Bleed' is unsettling precisely because it is one ordinary word used in an alien way. Liminal-horror settings like the Backrooms stretch familiar architecture - poolrooms, motels, offices - to infinity. Cosmological terms (plane, brane, layer, fold, strand) give hard-SF settings a physics texture, while planar fantasy in the D&D tradition names dimensions after elements and moods.
When you need many dimensions in one story, mix registers deliberately: give the home reality a number, the frightening one an article-name, and the strange civilization beyond the portal a proper noun. Readers will track them effortlessly.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide who is naming the dimension: scientists produce designations (Branch 3391), locals produce proper nouns (Kaerthos), and survivors produce grim nicknames (The Long Quiet). Point of view should drive the format.
- One strong word beats a stack of adjectives; 'The Seam' or 'The Wane' lands harder than 'The Dark Shadow Void Realm'.
- For a mirror or evil-twin reality, invert or corrupt the home world's name rather than inventing something new: Earth-Prime becomes Terra Obscura, Everywhen becomes Nevermere.
- Use numbers sparingly and consistently; if your multiverse uses Earth-2 and Earth-13, do not suddenly introduce Reality Delta-Null unless a different faction is doing the naming.
- Say the name aloud in a sentence like 'We lost contact with ___ three days ago' - if it sounds like a place people could actually be trapped in, it works.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a dimension, a universe, and a plane?
In everyday fiction they overlap, but by convention a universe is a complete parallel cosmos (Earth-616), a plane is a separate layer of reality with its own rules that overlaps ours (the Astral Plane, the Feywild), and a dimension can be either, or a small pocket reality. Pick one term and stick with it inside a single setting.
How do numbered dimension names like Earth-616 or C-137 work?
They imply a catalog maintained by an in-universe authority. Marvel's Earth-616 was originally an arbitrary number chosen by writer Alan Moore, and Rick and Morty's C-137 combines a letter and a number to sound bureaucratic. Any letter-number combination works, but keep the same scheme across your multiverse.
Are names like the Shadowfell or the Negative Zone free to use?
Specific dimension names from Marvel, DC, Wizards of the Coast, and other publishers are their intellectual property and appear here as reference examples. The original names in the list are free for any project, including commercial ones.
How many alternate dimensions should a story have?
Most successful multiverse stories give the reader two or three named realities to hold in mind and treat the rest as background noise. Name the ones where scenes actually take place, and gesture at the rest with a numbering scheme.
