Spy Name Generator

Spy names come in two layers. The first is the cover identity: a plausible, forgettable-but-elegant name that could sit on a passport. Ian Fleming named James Bond after an ornithologist precisely because it was "the dullest name I could find," and the genre has favored crisp two-syllable surnames ever since (Bond, Bourne, Hunt, Ryan, Palmer, Smiley). Villains and femmes fatales get the exotic vowels: Vesper Lynd, Xenia Onatopp, Natasha Romanoff, Elektra King. Nationality matters, too; a Russian defector called Nikolai Sokolov or an Israeli handler called Talia Sharon instantly places the character.

The second layer is the codename, and real tradecraft is stranger than fiction. British intelligence has used birds (the double agent Garbo, the operations Merlin and Nightjar), tools, and randomly assigned nouns; the CIA's names are famously two words with a leading cryptonym; le Carré's Circus used the nursery rhyme Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Poorman. Numbers and blanks work when the point is anonymity: Agent 47, 006, Number Six, Mr. Smith. Occupation aliases (The Milkman, The Watchmaker, The Bookseller) suit long-game sleeper agents in literary thrillers.

Use the cover names for a novel, a Blades in the Dark or Night's Black Agents campaign, or a murder-mystery party, and the codenames for team rosters, escape rooms, and gamertags.
